Two years ago, Tyrese Gibson was in a bad place. He was in the midst of a custody battle with his ex-wife Norma Gibson who was fighting for sole custody of their daughter, Shayla.

A restraining order was sought by Norma against Tyrese after their 10-year-old claimed he spanked her so hard she couldn’t sit down after.

He aired out his problems including not being able to see his daughter and losing work due to the allegations of abuse and the domestic violence claims Norma raised against him.

THE RAINBOW AFTER THE STORM

Essence caught up with the “Fast and Furious” star at the premiere of his new film, “Black and Blue.” Asked about his comeback from his famous meltdown, the actor credited his wife and his faith for getting him out of that mess.

“I pretty much checked off every box in the world to say to her, leave me. She stood by me through it all,” Tyrese said of Samantha Gibson, who was with him at the premiere.

Tyrese shared that “Black and Blue” was the first movie he booked after his breakdown.

“So, I came into this movie with a level of vulnerability that I probably couldn’t even tap into now, if I wanted to,” he admitted.

"There is no handsome, there is no relationship, there is no joke, there is no charm, no charisma, there is no resume that could have took me out of it."

Acknowledging that he had a lot of growing up to do since getting himself into that mess in the past, he was grateful that even when he had just married Samantha then, she sailed through for him.

“We wasn’t married 7 years, 10 years and said we going through a storm, let’s hawk it out. We had just been married, what a year boo boo?,” he said, the last part directed to his wife.

Tyrese also had a powerful message of faith for anyone who may go through what he had.

“Invite God in,” he advised.

“God sometimes need permission to get in. There is no handsome, there is no relationship, there is no joke, there is no charm, no charisma, there is no resume that could have took me out of it. The Lord Jesus Christ gets all the credit for what he did,” he added.

THE BLESSINGS HE NOW ENJOYS

Proof of Tyrese’s life turning around, he reveals that he shot three films in one year and has an album and book in the works.

“Black and Blue” is the first,” he begins to enumerate. “Then I signed a three-picture deal with Marvel comics. We got the Teddy Pendergrass movie coming, directed by Lee Daniels. We got the “Fast 9” movie that I just finished. Got a double album coming. My third book is coming, talking about everything.”

Tyrese goes on to say that he was “forever indebted” to the people especially the Black women who “helped pray me out of my mess.”

THE BOMBSHELL HE DROPPED ON WENDY WILLIAMS

While doing the rounds of movie promotions, Tyrese dropped by Wendy Williams show and caused quite a stir when he told the talk show host that the reason he hasn’t set foot on the program was her estranged husband, Kevin Hunter.

During a commercial gap, Tyrese told Wendy privately that Kevin banned him from her show when he suspected Tyrese was flirting with her.

This prompted Wendy to address the situation when they returned on air. She threw shade at the father of her son for barring her from flirting with another man when everyone knows he did more than that with another woman.

Wendy filed for divorce in April after learning Kevin fathered a child with his alleged long term mistress. Being her show’s executive producer, Kevin was soon after fired by Wendy.
