According to multiple sources who spoke to PEOPLE, the couple has hit a rough patch in their union and have had issues for months. As stated by the insider:

"They've been having problems for months. She's very independent and a free spirit, and that's been tough for Brooks and their marriage."

While it seems all hope is getting lost, another source close to the family reveals that the lovebirds are willing to put in the work as "they are not giving up."

While trying to work things out, people close to the couple note that they are not willing to discuss their issues with anyone as they want to figure things out their way.

The reports of a troubling marriage comes shortly after fans spotted something wrong last month after Hough was seen without her wedding ring while co-hosting NBC's "New Year's Eve" with Carson Daly on New Year.

The same thing was repeated in a Christmas Eve video on Instagram. Brooks, however, was seen with his ring in a workout video he posted on January 2.

PopCulture notes that Brooks gave hints about a troubled marriage in a cryptic post on Instagram on January 7. The Ice Hockey player wrote:

"I feel like a lot of my life has been "bound" to certain identities that have come through the sport I spent my life playing."

He then went on to say that he was looking forward to being boundless in the new year.

A day after the post, E! News reported that the couple has been spending some time away from each other. The insider said:

"They have been spending time apart but are not ready to share what's going on between them. They don't even really know what to call it."

The "Dancing With The Stars" alum and Brooks got engaged in 2015 after dating for about a year and a half. They walked down the aisle in 2017 in an outdoor ceremony outside of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
