For years, their love story seemed to survive the things that usually pull celebrity couples apart — distance, a broken engagement, and time spent on different continents. But the latest chapter suggests that sometimes, even a bond that runs deep can quietly drift into something neither person expected.

A Final Polished Public Appearance Before the Split News

In their last photo together before the split news, Cox and McDaid appeared at the 2025 US Open Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, on September 7, 2025, standing side by side on the blue carpet.

The actress wore an all-black look with a fitted top and skirt, while McDaid kept things casual in a black jacket, white T-shirt, dark pants, and sneakers.

At first glance, nothing about the appearance hinted at a major change behind the scenes. The pair looked relaxed, polished, and very much like a couple who had weathered plenty already.

However, according to The Daily Mail, Cox and McDaid have quietly separated after more than a decade together. The outlet reported that the "Friends" star and the Snow Patrol musician, who were once engaged, are understood to have gone their separate ways late last year (2025).

It is a bittersweet turn for a couple whose romance began in a way that sounded like something out of a celebrity dinner-party legend.

Cox and McDaid's Romance Began With a Party, a Piano, and a Little Celebrity Matchmaking

Cox and McDaid first met in 2013, when the actress hosted a star-studded party at her Los Angeles home. Ed Sheeran was invited and brought along some musician friends, including Taylor Swift, Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, and McDaid.

During an appearance on Howard Stern's show in 2022, Cox remembered being immediately struck by McDaid. "I remember seeing Johnny and going, 'Oh, wow. He's really intense.' He's got the eyes, and he's playing the piano. And I thought 'Oh he's really really handsome,' [sic]," she recalled.

According to Hello!, Cox later told her friend Isla Fisher about her crush on the Irish musician. Fisher's then-husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, reportedly relayed the message to the band, which finally helped get Cox and McDaid to spend time together.

By late 2013 and early 2014, the pair had been spotted together more than once, sparking rumors of a budding romance. They eventually went public in March 2014, making their red carpet debut at the Cinemagic Los Angeles Showcase at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, California.

The two twinned in black for the appearance and then seemed to cement their romance by attending several events together over the span of just one month.

The First Breakup Proved This Was Never a Simple Romance

Their relationship moved quickly. After a whirlwind romance, Cox and McDaid got engaged in February 2014.

For a while, they seemed inseparable, but the relationship soon faced a major test. The couple called off their engagement in late 2015 and spent months apart before eventually finding their way back to each other.

As People reported in March 2016, Cox and McDaid were spotted together in Malibu on Easter Sunday after their earlier split. The pair enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant before shopping with Cox's daughter Coco.

"They really care about each other and they're spending time together," Cox's rep told the outlet at the time. Still, People noted that Cox was not wearing her engagement ring during the outing. A source close to Cox and McDaid also said then, "They've been having problems for a long time."

Cox once joked that her relationship with McDaid was "expensive" because of all the travel between California and London. Years later, that distance appears to have been part of the quiet shift that led them into separate lives. | Source: Getty Images

McDaid made his feelings clear when speaking to E! News in May 2016. "Just look at us," he said. "I love her. I've always loved her." Years later, Cox herself gave a raw look at just how intense that earlier breakup had been.

While appearing on Minnie Driver's podcast in April 2024, Cox said the split had happened in therapy. "Three years in, we broke up, and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy. I didn't know it was coming, whether I should have or not."

That admission made the couple's history feel even more layered. This was not just a glossy celebrity romance; it had already survived a painful break, a called-off engagement, and a reunion that clearly meant a lot to both of them.

The pair had long split their time between the US and the UK, a reality that became central to the story of their relationship. According to a friend, the breakup was not ugly but came after they reached a point where they were "living different lives." | Source: Getty Images

But one issue kept sitting quietly in the background: distance. McDaid was living in London, while Cox remained in California. Their relationship stretched between the UK and the US, with the couple often splitting time between both places.

Cox even joked about the arrangement during a 2019 appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." "That's an expensive relationship," she said. "We go back and forth a lot." At the time, Cox also suggested that their earlier time apart had taught them something important.

"I think the distance after that breakup, we were apart for six months, that really showed us a lot. It's just better," she shared.

The Quiet Reason Behind the Recent Split Finally Comes Into Focus

For years, that seemed to be their unusual rhythm: two homes, two countries, many flights, and a bond that somehow kept going. But now, the very thing they appeared to manage for so long may have become part of the reason things changed. A friend confirmed to The Daily Mail that the separation is amicable, not bitter.

"Johnny speaks incredibly highly of Courteney. They had a very deep relationship and they remain extremely amicable. They are great friends and care about each other very much," the friend divulged.

Then came the detail that makes the breakup especially sad, as the same insider also disclosed:

"This was not an ugly split. They had simply reached a point where they were living different lives."

That line says a lot. After more than a decade together, Cox and McDaid reportedly did not end things because of some explosive public drama. Instead, their lives appear to have slowly moved in different directions. Cox, now 62, is based in Los Angeles, while Northern Ireland-born McDaid, 49, has been mostly based in London.

The couple had long split their time between the US and the UK, but according to the report, they eventually reached a point where they were simply no longer living the same day-to-day life. Since the split, both are rumored to have moved on.

McDaid is understood to be in the early stages of a new relationship. Cox, meanwhile, was recently spotted in New York with her "Shining Vale" Co-Star Greg Kinnear, who stayed at her apartment.

Although Cox and Kinnear play husband and wife in the satirical horror comedy, the pair have confirmed they are just good friends. Cox has also remained close to her ex-husband David Arquette, with whom she shares daughter Coco.

Friends say Courteney Cox and Arquette have long had a strong and amicable co-parenting relationship. Representatives for Cox and McDaid were contacted for comment.

For fans who followed this relationship from its piano-playing party beginning to its long-distance years, the ending may feel surprisingly quiet. There is no ugly back-and-forth, no public blame, and no dramatic scandal attached to the split.

Instead, the reported reason is much more human, and maybe more heartbreaking. Sometimes, even after a decade, an engagement, a reunion, and years of effort, two people can still care deeply for each other while realizing they are no longer living the same life.
