A new TV role left the Hollywood icon struggling to get through the script, not because of the acting challenge, but because of what it made him feel about the person waiting for him at home.

Kurt Russell, 75, is rarely the type to wear his heart on his sleeve in public. But his new Paramount+ series, "The Madison," seems to have changed that.

A Love Story Hiding in Plain Sight

Russell and Goldie Hawn go back further than most people realize. He first spotted her in 1967 on the set of "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band," a comedy musical western.

He was 15. She was a 21-year-old dancer in her film debut. Hawn later told BBC Radio 4 in 2012 that she found him "adorable, but much too young," and that, for a while, was that.

Life moved on for both of them. Russell landed a career-defining role playing Elvis Presley in the 1979 TV movie "Elvis." Hawn built her own impressive filmography, and both went through marriages that didn't last.

Then came 1983, and a film called "Swing Shift."

When the Timing Finally Lined Up

By the time Russell and Hawn crossed paths again on that set, both were divorced, and each had a child. He has described their early agreement simply:

"Let's have fun until we don't."

Forty-three years later, they're still having fun.

Their acting chemistry was undeniable, and Hollywood took notice. The two reunited on screen just a few years later in the beloved 1987 romantic comedy "Overboard."

But their family life was even more interesting. The couple expanded their family in 1986 when they had their son, Wyatt Russell, who has since turned 39. Russell also acted as a father figure to Hawn's two children from her past marriage to musician Bill Hudson: Kate Hudson, 46, and Oliver Hudson, 49.

He also shares son Boston Russell, 45, with his ex-wife, actress Season Hubley, 74. The pair currently shares their time between four different cities, keeping homes in Los Angeles, Palm Desert, New York, and Old Snowmass, Colorado.

One thing they have never done, though, is get married. And Hawn has been straightforward about why.

The Question Everyone Keeps Asking

In a 2023 interview on CNN's "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?" host Chris Wallace asked Hawn directly why she and Russell hadn't tied the knot after nearly four decades together. Her response was characteristically sharp:

"Why should we be? Isn't that a better question?"

Hawn, who has been through two divorces, was candid about what she's seen marriage become when it falls apart. "When it doesn't work out, it ends up to be big business," she said, adding, "It's always ugly." She listed off the costs, emotional and financial, that divorces tend to carry.

When Wallace pushed back, pointing out that after 40 years they clearly weren't going to split, Hawn didn't accept the premise.

"How did you know that then?" she replied. For her, the daily choice to stay is the point. "I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here."

It's a philosophy that has kept their relationship intact longer than most Hollywood marriages. And now, a Taylor Sheridan drama has given Russell his own moment of reflection about his long-lasting relationship.

The Admission About Goldie Hawn

In "The Madison," Russell plays Preston Clyburn, a man whose death in the very first episode sets everything else in motion. His character's wife, Stacy, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, is left to grieve while slowly realizing she never fully understood the depth of what they had.

She never even visited his beloved Montana cabin while he was alive.

According to Fox News, Russell couldn't stay detached after reading those scripts.

"I had a hard time getting through the scripts," he told The National. "They just kept hitting me really hard, and I felt that that was a big part of this show's potential, ability to grab an audience. Its writing was so authentic."

What affected him most was the specific kind of loss at the story's center: not just a person, but the realization of everything left unexplored.

"It was so powerful for it to have a serious, true love relationship with someone, and then for one of those people to go, and for the other to realize they didn't know how good it was," he said. "They didn't know there was so much more to it, and they're not going to let that go."

Furthermore, the actor told Men's Health that some of Preston and Stacy's conversations felt remarkably close to ones he and Hawn have actually had. According to him, the pair shared a deeply affectionate relationship built on sincere love, free from the fear of hidden problems or unexpected betrayals.

Russell also connected the story's emotional weight to something more universal, especially for anyone at a certain stage of life.

"I think a lot of people relate to that kind of regret," he continued. "As you get older, and you've only got so much time left, that doubles things up in terms of looking at what you've done in your life so far and what you want to do with the rest of your life."

Montana, Grief, and a Surprise Renewal

The series centers on Stacy and her family as they move from Manhattan to Montana's Madison River Valley. This location was Preston's favorite place and the site of his death. Once there, Stacy starts to discover secrets about his life that she never realized existed.

Sheridan mixed deep sorrow with a sense of dark humor, a style that Russell found impressive. This approach clearly resonated with viewers. Following its March 14 debut, the pilot episode reached 8 million global streams within 10 days.

This success marked Sheridan's most successful series premiere so far. The season concluded on March 21 with the release of the final three episodes, and the network approved a second season soon after. Although the crew finished filming the new episodes, the studio has not yet set a premiere date.

Even though Preston dies in the opener, Russell appeared in every episode of season one through flashbacks. And season two, he hinted, will give audiences even more of what made the love story resonate in the first place. "In many, many ways, it's better," he said. "You see them together a lot."

For a man who has spent over 43 years choosing the same person every day, that sounds about right. Interestingly, their daughter recently joked about something they've also had for over four decades.
