Now, the world gets to enjoy her powerful vocals and her passionate worship, and she has the perfect partner by her side. Not only is he a man of God, but he is also a talented musician who brings out the best of her.
TASHA COBBS LEONARD'S BEGINNINGS
Cobbs Leonard started singing at a very young age, but it was at 15 that she was pushed into the spotlight by the members of her youth choir group.
Two years later, the happy couple took their family and friends by surprise with an unannounced wedding ceremony.
On a particular day, the lead vocalist of the choir had been unable to perform, and Tasha was entrusted with replacing her.
"I got up that night, and I sang 'Now, Behold the Lamb,' and when I opened my eyes, people were crying," she recalled. It was then that she realized she had a remarkable gift and a mission in life.
After a move to Atlanta, Cobbs Leonard joined the dReam Center Church as a worship leader and the manager of the Worship & Arts Department.
It was around that time that she met Kenneth Leonard at a worship conference, and they developed a close friendship.
However, two years later, Tasha launched her career as a gospel singer with the self-release of her first EP, "Smile," and life would become busy in the following years.
TASHA COBBS LEONARD'S CAREER
Cobbs Leonard's talent caught the attention of executives at Motown Gospel. In 2013, she released her first official project, "Grace," which reached number 2 on the Top Gospel Albums chart and entered Billboard's Top 10 Gospel Albums chart.
She also won the Grammy for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance with the same project and has now released two more studio albums.
Cobbs Leonard is known for her open approach when it comes to mixing gospel music with other genres. She has collaborated with Common and had Nicki Minaj drop some bars on the single "I'm Getting Ready."
Although not everyone welcomed the collaboration with open arms, Cobbs Leonard explained that she was more than glad to offer Minaj a platform to share her story.
"We're forever evolving, and sometimes people will fight change, but I know that this is something we both had to do," she told Billboard.
MEET KENNETH LEONARD
While Cobbs Leonard was busy building her career as a gospel singer, her future husband, Kenneth Leonard, was doing the same as a music producer, composer, and director.
He has worked with artists such as William Murphy, Anthony Hamilton, Tamia, and of course, Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
Leonard has credits in Grammy-nominated albums like Cobbs Leonard's "Heart. Passion. Pursuit," Murphy's "Settle Here," and "We The Kingdom's Holy Water - Church Sessions."
In April 2020, Leonard signed an exclusive songwriting contract with Capitol CMG Publishing, the leading Christian music publisher in the world.
Leonard said he felt "humbled and honored" for the opportunity and shared his excitement about the new venture, claiming he was ready to make some musical history with the company.
Aside from his producing and songwriting, Leonard is also the creator of the Sound Conference, which offers mentorship for newcomer musicians in several areas, from the latest technology in music to work ethic and the development of music skills.
Leonard is also the proud father of three adorable kids from previous relationships. He shares daughter Alanaa with author Devin Nishea and son Shai and daughter Symphony with Shya Truesdell.
THE SURPRISE WEDDING
Cobbs Leonard and Leonard reunited once again around 2015, and a romantic relationship developed naturally. Two years later, the happy couple took their family and friends by surprise with an unannounced wedding ceremony that was masked as a dinner party.
"After a year of pre-marital counseling and much planning, the timing was finally perfect. It was incredible to be able to surprise those closest to us!" Cobbs Leonard said at the time.
The pair exchanged vows in a small but beautiful ceremony that was centered on what's most important for them: "Worship, prayer, fun, laughter, and family."
Cobbs Leonard would later admit that she'd never wanted a wedding and all the fanfare that surrounds such an event. However, she did wish to have a marriage, as she grew up watching her parents honoring their vows.
In 2018, the couple joined their longtime friend and collaborator, Pastor John Gray III, at his Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina. They also made an appearance on Gray's OWN reality show "The Book of John Gray."
