Pierce Brosnan and filmmaker and journalist Keely Shaye Brosnan bought two adjoining Malibu properties in 2000, then spent roughly a decade turning the land into a Thai-inspired estate known as Orchid House.

When the 12,500-square-foot compound hit the market at $100 million in September 2020, its price drew attention, but the rooms inside offered far more to discuss.

A Bond Bonus Came With One Remarkable Invitation

The idea began after Pierce received good news about "Die Another Day," his fourth and final James Bond movie. While speaking with the film's producers from the kitchen of the couple's aging Malibu ranch, he learned that the movie's success meant a substantial bonus was headed his way.

His response placed the future of the property in Keely's hands. As Pierce recalled to The Wall Street Journal, "I said to Keely, 'Go build your dream house.' And she did."

“Die Another Day” earned $431.9 million at the box office, according to a 2020 report, so Keely now had the chance to turn one sentence from her husband into a decade-long building project.

That invitation carried extra meaning for a couple who had already built a life together after painful and unexpected changes. Pierce had been a widower and single father for roughly two years and four months following the death of his first wife, Cassandra Harris, from ovarian cancer on December 28, 1991.

According to People, he met Keely at a beach party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on April 8, 1994. She had traveled there to interview Ted Danson, but when Ted was called away, she connected with the "Mamma Mia!" star at the party instead.

They dated for seven years before marrying in August 2001. By then, the couple had already bought the Malibu land where Keely would eventually turn a Bond-era windfall into a highly personal family home.

And of course, it's a home they have enjoyed for more than two decades already. On August 5, 2026, Keely marked their 25th wedding anniversary on Instagram, writing:

Her message placed the mansion's history inside a much longer love story, one that began years before the first Thai door or green roof tile arrived in Malibu.

Thailand Gave the Couple Their Design Direction

The Brosnans' inspiration came from the actor's time filming the 1997 Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" in Thailand. They fell for the country's architecture and later hired architects Ralph and Ross Anderson to help translate those memories into a California beach estate.

The couple had purchased one parcel containing a midcentury modern home for $5.1 million, followed by the neighboring lot for approximately $2.25 million. Their combined investment in the land came to $7.35 million, but the existing ranch-style residence could not comfortably accommodate their family.

Keely supervised the design and construction, a process that lasted about 10 years. This was not simply Pierce's house with his wife choosing a few finishes. Orchid House was Keely's dream project, shaped through years of decisions she personally oversaw.

The completed property covered roughly one acre on Broad Beach, with reports placing its ocean frontage between 117 and 120 feet. For comparison, the average home in that area had about 42 feet of frontage, according to listing agent Chris Cortazzo of Compass.

Its carved teak entrance gates came directly from Thailand. Wide-plank Brazilian teak flooring continued the Southeast Asian influence indoors, while antique chandeliers selected in Paris introduced another layer to the design.

The green clay-tile roof was modeled after temples the couple had admired during their travels. Keely said, "It was a labor of love to get the exact green color," explaining that its shade was based on the mountains behind the house.

Keely Filled the Main House With Unexpected Details

The main residence contains four bedrooms within an open floor plan, while the full compound has five bedrooms between the primary home and guest accommodations. Reports differed on the total number of bathrooms, but the 2021 listing coverage described 14 across the two residences.

Outside the theater, the design becomes even more indulgent. A wine lounge has a bar topped with butterflied, caramel-colored onyx and climate-controlled storage for roughly 200 bottles.

Keely also disclosed one appropriately Bond-like preference, saying her husband "loves to have a martini." The dedicated bar suggests that particular order never required a long trip from the screening room.

The music room carried its own celebrity connection through a grand piano once owned by saxophonist Kenny G, a friend of the family who played at the house several times. When the musician decided to part with the instrument, the Brosnans bought it.

Pierce admitted that he initially did not know how to play. After looking at the piano for a year, he took lessons and learned "Lean on Me," while the couple's musician son Dylan Brosnan made greater use of it.

The piano also became part of the atmosphere during gatherings. Pierce remembered hosting "the greatest parties" at Orchid House, a claim that sounds considerably more believable after seeing the screening room, wine bar, music space, and spa arranged on one level.

The Brosnans also brought in sand to create what Keely called "our own private beach above the beach." That raised play area allowed their sons, Dylan and Paris Brosnan, to remain closer to the house when they were young.

Orchid House later survived a frightening threat. The 2018 Woolsey Fire caused only limited smoke damage to the property while destroying many other homes in the region.

Pierce acknowledged the contrast without minimizing what neighbors endured. "We were very lucky," he said. "There were quite a few who lost everything."

A $100 Million Price Could Not Secure a Buyer

The couple placed Orchid House on the market for $100 million in September 2020. At the time, the nine-figure figure reportedly made it the eighth-most-expensive residential listing in Los Angeles County.

A sale at the full asking price would also have ranked among Malibu's biggest residential deals. The area already had a history of enormous transactions, including $100 million and $110 million sales.

The listing arrived as the Brosnans were spending more time at their home on Kauai's North Shore. Keely grew up in Hawaii, and with Dylan and Paris now older, the couple's daily lives had shifted away from the Malibu estate.

"We have a new dream now," Keely said. Pierce remained emotionally attached to the California coast, telling the publication, "I love Malibu. It has my heart."

However, he added that "home is very much here in the islands." The couple considered finding another California property in Santa Barbara and had already purchased a $2.945 million Santa Monica house in 2019 for their sons.

But Orchid House remained unsold for about a year. Pierce removed the property from the market in July 2021 without reducing its $100 million asking price, after receiving no offers, according to the New York Post.

The estate had also appeared as a rental in earlier years. In 2004, it was reportedly offered for $120,000 per month, long before its nine-figure sales listing made international headlines.

Viewers Could Not Agree on Keely's Dream House

Once people were able to examine the property through a detailed video tour, opinions split sharply. Some admired Keely's craftsmanship and taste, while others questioned the location, interior mix, privacy, and asking price.

One commenter praised the estate without reservation, writing, "This is the most beautiful home I've ever seen on this channel. Just gorgeous and so tasteful."

Another commenter felt uneasy about the location, writing, "The location of the house gives me anxiety. It's in-between a busy road and a beach.. like, anything could happen 😩 [sic]." The asking price drew a far less enthusiastic response from one person, who commented, "Way overpriced more like $20 - 30 million [sic]."

Another commenter appreciated some of the individual features but rejected the overall combination, writing, "Ridiculously expensive with decor that's at odds with the architecture, and zero privacy in your garden..Many beautiful elements individually but it doesn't come together at all [sic]."
