HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Before gaining fame in Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne,” McKinney faced hardship and was homeless during her adolescence. She recalled:
“I lived in the projects, I survived abuse, I survived molestation, I survived single motherhood at a young age.”
She would rely on different family members to survive and realized that those who looked like they had the least gave the most.
TAKING HER EXPERIENCE TO THE SHOW
McKinney hopes her latest show, “Motherland: Fort Salem” can impart women empowerment and perseverance to the audience.
The images show the mother and son in matching dreadlocks while Cairo kissed his mom on the cheek.
She was able to relate with characters from the series with her personal experiences as a surviving woman and single parent. According to the star, her son has taught her about discipline and compassion without knowing it.

PERSONAL LIFE
McKinney welcomed her son at the early age of 17 and raised him alone. In 2010, she married production manager Kyle Lai Fatt but they had no children together.
Although she keeps a busy schedule, the actress always squeezes in time with her family which she believes is the most important in her priorities.
In her free time, McKinney travels, watches good films, and lets her artistic side flow through painting. She will also be celebrating her 41st birthday on August 27.

Despite having several down moments in life, McKinney remains grateful for her many blessings, both in family and career.
