The show has plans for a spin-off "Law & Order: Organized Crime", Meloni's appearance in season 22 of SVU will act as a lead in to the new spin-off show, which is lively to debut in 2021.

However, production of the new show had been delayed due to the complications surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and so the reunion of Benson and Stabler had been postponed for a while.

Meloni had appeared on "The Talk" where he confirmed Hargitay's character Benson and his character Stabler's return to the show, however, he does not know how much her character will be on the show and that it is up to the writers.

He went on to further explain, that the character has of course changed because society has dramatically changed since his last appearance on the show,

"I think, in real terms, society, and what we are dealing with in society, has changed dramatically. So, I think you have to address that. "

Hargitay and Meloni were on the first 12 seasons of the show together from 1999 to 2011. Meloni's reprise will mean his first time playing his beloved character in 9 years.

In the "Law & Order" world his character, Stabler, had retired from police business. However, in the real world, it was contractual disputes that intervened.

During last month's table read Meloni was reunited with the show's Hargitay, Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Ice-T, and Jamie Gray Hyder as well as with the "SVU" creative team.

The spin-off, "Law & Order: Organized Crime" will see Stabler's return to law enforcement. Stabler will have to amend his old ways as he runs an elite new task force to take on the city's powerful criminal syndicates.
