A 10-year-old boy has become a local hero after losing his life while saving his six-year-old sister. The siblings fell into a pond after the ice they were on broke and left them drowning.

On Sunday morning, the event left the six-year-old girl with injuries, but her 10-year-old heroic brother was not so lucky to be alive and received the praise he deserves for his brave efforts.

Brent Perkins of the Shelby County Fire Department revealed that the bodies of water around the region do not freeze strong enough to support a person's weight on it and can be very dangerous.

First responders reportedly tried to save the 10-year-old alongside Millington firefighters who launched an inflatable boat, donned drysuits, and searched the ice-cold water. Still, their efforts came too late for the young boy.

Reports revealed that the 10-year-old boy, Benjamin Luckett, and his sister Abigail Luckett were playing close to their house with one of their brothers before Abigail fell into the pond.

City officials have issued a report warning everyone to be careful of stepping on the ice as the water is not strong enough to keep their weight.

One of the brothers rushed in to call their father while the brave Benjamin attempted to save his sister in the pond, a move though brave, led to the end of his young life. By the time their father got to the scene, it was too late to save both.

Their dad was able to bring Abigail back to shore, but Benjamin remained in the freezing water. Firefighters revealed that they could tell that the brave 10-year-old was trying to keep his head above the water.

Recent reports revealed that Abigail is in a stable condition and has been taken off the ventilator. She is said to be doing better and has been talking to her family.

The family is said to be grateful for the warm love and support they have received since the sad incident took place. A GoFundMe page has also been set up for the funeral and medical expenses.

The children’s mother, Christine, has also taken the bold step of telling Abigail of her brother’s huge sacrifice, and it is reported that the six-year-old is taking it well, although it is a huge blow to everyone.

Following the sad event, city officials have issued a report warning everyone to be careful of stepping on the ice as the water is not strong enough to keep their weight and prevent them from drowning.
