Their union is strong, but Serita and Bishop Jakes have had their share of ups and downs.
Serita and Bishop Jakes will be celebrating their 39th anniversary in May. The couple first met when Bishop Jakes was a 23-year-old visiting preacher at a church in West Virginia.
The duo walked down the aisle in 1981 and went on to have five children: Sarah, Jermaine, Cora, Thomas, and Jamar. After all these years of marriage, the couple is still going strong.
Their union is strong, but Serita and Bishop Jakes have had their share of ups and downs. Six months into their marriage, the couple suffered a life-threatening car crash that left Serita with severe leg and foot injuries.
Doctors were not sure if Serita could ever walk again. As she recovered, Bishop Jakes stayed by her side. That experience nurtured their relationship in a big way.
According to Bishop Jakes, going through a difficult time together early on in the marriage enriched their bond. He had to focus all his energy and attention on his wife's care.
Bishop Jakes taught her how to walk, cooked for her, and took care of her. Luckily, Serita made a full recovery. Nothing about the process was easy, but it brought the couple closer.
