Jack White's Wife of Four Years Files for Divorce — What She Claims in the Filing
A single line in Olivia Jean's divorce filing has become the focal point of her split from Jack White, raising questions about what happened behind the scenes.
Their marriage began with a surprise proposal and wedding onstage before a live audience. Four years later, singer-songwriter Olivia Jean has filed for divorce from Jack White, the Grammy-winning musician and co-founder of The White Stripes.
As the legal proceedings move forward, both the court filing and the couple's social media activity have drawn renewed attention.

Reactions to the divorce filing ranged from sympathy to surprise, with some social media users questioning what led to the end of the couple's four-year marriage. | Source: Facebook/entertainmentweekly
What the Court Documents Reveal About Their Marriage Date
Jean filed for divorce on June 3, 2026, according to court documents obtained by Entertainment Weekly, and listed the same day as the couple’s date of separation. The case marks the end of White’s third marriage.
With neither White nor Jean publicly addressing the split, the court filing offers the first official details about the case. It also includes an unexpected note about the couple’s marriage timeline.

It lists their marriage as taking place in December 2022 in Nashville, even though White and Jean held a surprise wedding ceremony during his April 8, 2022, concert in Detroit. At the time, a representative for White reportedly said that the marriage was "legal and valid."
How Social Media Users Reacted to the Limited Court Filing
While the filing left many questions unanswered, it quickly sparked discussion online.
On Instagram, one user wrote, "That's so sad. I'm sure they're both going through an emotional time." Another commented, "I really wanna know what he did that weirded her out enough to deem him inappropriate. 😮," while a third simply wrote, "Her loss."

Similar reactions appeared on Facebook. One commenter joked, "Jack is married to his guitar 🎸 it never complains when he comes home."
Another asked, "He fumbled Olivia?" while a third wrote, "I already called it as soon as they announced their reuniting (AGAIN)."
While much of the online discussion focused on what may have happened, the court filing itself reveals the legal reason Jean gave for ending the marriage.

What Jean Says Led Her to File for Divorce
According to the complaint, Jean alleges that White is guilty of "inappropriate marital conduct."
"Wife would show that Husband is guilty of inappropriate marital conduct, which makes further cohabitation unsafe and improper," the complaint states.
The filing leaves many questions unanswered, but it does outline several requests Jean wants the court to consider as the divorce proceeds.

What Jean Wants the Court to Decide Beyond the Divorce
According to the filing, Jean says she is financially dependent on White and is requesting financial support. She is also asking that White continue to maintain her as a beneficiary on his life insurance policy.
In addition, Jean requests that White cover her attorney's fees and any other expenses incurred in the preparation and prosecution of her divorce complaint.
Although the court filing focuses on the legal proceedings, activity on the couple's social media accounts has also drawn attention since news of the divorce emerged.

What Changed on Jean's Social Media After the Filing?
After news of the divorce became public, Jean's Instagram page appeared to no longer include posts featuring White. One notable exception is a tribute she shared following the death of White's mother, Teresa Gillis, in March 2026.
In the post, Jean shared a photo embracing Gillis and thanked her for welcoming her into the family. She wrote that she would cherish her forever and described knowing her as "a blessing."
The apparent change contrasts with how Jean had previously shared moments from their relationship online.
According to a 2022 report by Today, she had celebrated White's birthday the previous summer by posting a black-and-white photo of the two together wearing vintage-inspired outfits.
However, an older Facebook post from August 2018 also remains visible. In it, Jean reshared White's announcement inviting her to open his final two Las Vegas shows after her band's tour van broke down in the desert.
While some of Jean's posts appear to no longer be visible, White's Instagram account still includes years of posts about her.
What White's Social Media Still Shows
White's Instagram continues to feature years of posts documenting both his relationship with Jean and his support for her music.
One of the most recent posts came in February 2026, when White publicly wished Jean a happy birthday. Sharing a photo of her, he wrote, "I want to wish a very Happy Birthday to Olivia Jean!!!"
In April 2025, White marked the couple's third wedding anniversary with a photo of them together. In the caption, he called Jean "this [expletive] Detroit guitar player chick I love Mrs. Olivia Jean."
White also celebrated Jean's birthday in February 2025 by sharing backstage photos taken in Paris. Along with wishing her a happy birthday, he also gave photographer David Swanson a birthday shout-out.

His account includes quieter moments from their life together as well. In June 2024, White posted photos of Jean enjoying a peaceful morning in Nashville, writing about coffee, a cool breeze, and birds singing in the trees.

White frequently promoted Jean's music throughout their relationship. In April 2023, he reposted Third Man Records' announcement for Raving Ghost, the title track from Jean's third solo album, encouraging fans to stream the song and watch its official music video.
His posts date back to the beginning of their marriage.
White has also kept the Instagram post he shared after proposing to Jean onstage, pairing the photo with the lyric, "Let's get married in a big cathedral by a priest." Many of those milestones began with a concert that unexpectedly became one of the most memorable nights of White's career.
How the Surprise Wedding Unfolded in 2022
As reported by USA Today, White surprised fans during a 2022 stop on his Supply Chain Issues Tour by inviting Jean onstage to perform "Hotel Yorba."
Before they began the song, he introduced her as his girlfriend and told the audience, "I love her very much." As the song approached the line, "Let's get married," White paused the performance and faced Jean.

"I've got a question for you," he said. "Will you marry me?" He then produced a ring as Jean, visibly emotional and in tears, indicated her acceptance before joining him to complete the song.
The surprises did not end there. During the encore, White and Jean returned to the stage and exchanged vows in a ceremony officiated by Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank.
Their respective bass players served as best man and maid of honor, while members of their families — including White's mother, Gillis — stood beside them as the ceremony took place.
What appeared to be a spontaneous moment for concertgoers was the culmination of a relationship that had been developing for more than a decade.
How White and Jean's Relationship Grew over the Years
White and Jean first met in 2009 after Jean left a demo CD at a performance by White's band, The Dead Weather.
According to The Olympian, White later invited her to Nashville, where she became the frontwoman of The Black Belles, one of the early acts signed to his Third Man Records label.
Although they worked together for years, their relationship did not become romantic until around 2014.
Speaking with The New York Times in 2022, Jean said they were close friends before they started dating and described their romance as "more like a continuation" than a sudden change.

Years of friendship eventually led to the onstage proposal, wedding, and four-year marriage that has now become the subject of divorce proceedings.
Jean became White's third wife, following two earlier marriages and another high-profile relationship that also drew public attention.

What Came Before White's Marriage to Jean
Before marrying Jean, White was married to his White Stripes bandmate, Meg White. As reported by Us Weekly, the couple married in 1996 before forming the band the following year. However, they divorced in 2000, though they continued performing together until the group's eventual breakup.

After divorcing his first wife, White reportedly dated actor Renée Zellweger, whom he met while filming "Cold Mountain." Their relationship lasted about a year and a half before ending in 2004.
In 2005, White married model and musician Karen Elson. The couple welcomed two children and often collaborated professionally before announcing their separation in 2011. Their divorce was finalized in 2013 after a public custody dispute.

Jean's divorce filing now marks the end of White's third marriage. While the court documents identify the legal grounds for the divorce and outline Jean's requests to the court, the publicly reported filing does not describe the specific conduct underlying the allegation.
