Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Daughter Zahara Officially Removes ‘Pitt’ from Her Name

The court's approval makes Zahara the third of the former couple's six children to officially shed the Pitt name, with a fourth sibling's hearing just weeks away.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter, Zahara Jolie, has officially dropped her father's last name. Following her name change petition hearing on Monday, September 28, the 21-year-old now legally goes by "Zahara Marley Jolie" instead of "Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt."

Zahara formally petitioned to have "Pitt" removed from her name on June 9, in a filing that dated back to April 28. According to court documents obtained by People and E! News, a California judge approved the request without any objections.

The ruling didn't come entirely out of the blue, as Zahara had already dropped hints about the change.

When she crossed the stage at her Spelman College graduation in Atlanta in May, her name was announced as "Zahara Marley Jolie." She had also introduced herself that way in a speech while joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority back in November 2023.

Amid the family changes, Zahara's bond with her mother appears to be as strong as ever. In May, a source shared that Jolie has an "amazing relationship" with her daughter, and that the actress shows up for "pretty much everything" Zahara is involved in.

"She really encourages all the kids to embrace their individualities. She always loved their different personalities, interests and talents," the insider added. "She makes an effort to support what matters to each of them."

Together, Pitt, 62, and Jolie, 51, share six children: Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, Shiloh, 20, and 18-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

Zahara isn't the only one of the siblings to take this step. Just days before she submitted her petition, her older brother Maddox also filed to remove his father's last name.

In July, both siblings reaffirmed their intentions by publishing legal notices in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, as required under California law.

Maddox's name change from "Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt" to "Maddox Chivan Jolie" became official on September 14, according to public court records reviewed by People.

With their requests granted, Maddox and Zahara followed in the footsteps of Shiloh, who filed to drop Pitt's name on her 18th birthday back in 2024, joining their sister in officially leaving the Pitt name behind.

Vivienne appears to be next in line. On her own 18th birthday this past July, she filed to change her name from "Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt" to "Vivienne Marcheline Jolie."

After a notice was likewise published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, her name change petition hearing was set for November 2. The children's decisions follow years of upheaval between their parents.

Pitt and Jolie separated in 2016 after 12 years together and two years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized in December 2024.

Notably, Shiloh, Zahara, Maddox, and Vivienne's legal moves to drop Pitt from their names came exactly 10 years after an alleged incident involving the "Fight Club" star and his family aboard a private plane.

Sources previously claimed that on September 14, 2016, the Oscar winner was allegedly "verbally abusive" and "physical" with one of his kids. Pitt was subsequently investigated on suspicion of child abuse, though the FBI later cleared him.

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services also closed its investigation with no findings of abuse.
