Around 3 am, authorities received reports of a crash. Upon arriving there, the police found the vehicle, a 2003 Jaguar sedan, had flipped on its side and hit a utility pole. Four of the five passengers, including the driver, suffered injuries.
They were all immediately transported to both Nyack Hospital and Westchester Medical Center to treat their non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, Zangrilli was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old's death shook the whole of Rockland County. In a tribute shared on the GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral costs, Zangrilli was described as a beautiful soul. It read:
"Jacqueline was full of life. Anyone that met Jacqueline loved her. She made others smile in an instant and was quick to bring on laughter in a room."
The late teenager was hailed for her love for school and sports, particularly basketball and field hockey. In a statement from Principal Patrick Breen, the school is offering counseling to help students and teachers through the devastating time.
Upon investigating the crash, authorities of the Ramapo PD shared in a press release that the vehicle's driver was a 17-year-old Suffern resident who was drunk. After his treatment, the suspect was arrested.
He has since been charged with DWI, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, first-degree vehicular assault, second-degree manslaughter and assault ― to which he all pleaded not all guilty.
Zangrilli's heartbreaking demise comes days after two teenagers were killed and five others were injured in an accident in Kalgup, Australia. The group of seven was driving around 8 pm when they reportedly failed to negotiate a bend.
The vehicle crashed into a tree and was split in half. Two boys aged 15 and 16 who sat in the trunk of the car were pronounced dead. The driver sustained severe injuries while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
