A husband slammed his wife for being disabled and insulted her. Not long after, karma made him learn a lesson the hard way.

Steven and Mary were a happily married couple. But that happiness only lasted five years. One night, while the couple was driving home after a late-night party, Steven lost control of the steering wheel, and their car crashed. Thankfully, a passer-by witnessed the accident and rushed them to the hospital.

Steven was lucky enough, and he didn’t suffer any serious injuries, but Mary was confined to the wheelchair. The doctors told her she wouldn’t be able to walk again and that if she overexerted herself, her body wouldn’t be able to bear it.

Since Mary was almost confined to the bed now, Steven had to take care of the household chores. For a few days, he did everything like a dutiful husband.

Steven was punctual at work, returned home from the office on time, completed the housework, and even looked after Mary. However, he soon became dissatisfied with everything.

He didn’t want to work any longer, so he left his job and forced Mary to take a remote job. Mary insisted on assisting him with housework rather than accepting a full-time position because a job would be tedious for her. But Steven didn’t listen.

He just left his job one day. Since there was a house loan in Mary's name, she didn’t have any other option but to take up the job.

Months went by, and Mary somehow managed to pull off the tight deadlines at work and pay the loan. Steven, on the other hand, just started complaining more. When Mary was tired and couldn't get up, he would get furious. "You know what, Mary, I think you should start doing something around the house," he would say.

Mary would calmly explain, "Honey, I'm sorry you have to do everything by yourself, but even I have a full-time job. Since you're not working, you can at least help around the house."

But Steven had only one response to this every time. "Don't think that you can boss me around because you're working. I'm looking after the house because you're disabled. Do you get it? You can't even WALK!"

Mary felt awful when Steven taunted her like that, but she never retaliated because she thought Steven was under pressure from the housework. After all, he was new to household chores.

But one day, Steven did something that proved he wasn't really tired of work. He was instead tired of Mary and her disability, he was tired of looking after her, and things only got worse after that day...

It was Steven’s birthday. Mary arranged a surprise party for him and invited their close family and friends. She sent Steven to the grocery store to keep the surprise from him. And as soon as he returned, everyone at the house screamed, “Happy Birthday, Stevieee!”

“Omg, you guys!” Steven responded cheerfully, “How did you guys remember it was my birthday?”

“Well, you should thank Mary for that,” a woman named Claire said.

The moment Steven heard Mary’s name, his face turned pale. “Huh? Why would I thank that disabled freak?” he mumbled. “It’s because of her that I have to look after the house.”

Meanwhile, Mary was happy that Steven had liked the surprise. She was expecting that he would come up to her, hug her, and thank her. But that didn’t happen.

Instead, Steven went straight to the dinner table where the cake was and called everyone except Mary. “Guys, guys, come, let’s cut the cake,” he said as he walked away.

Mary felt awful, but she didn’t say anything. She began pushing her wheelchair to follow everyone to the table, but Steven stopped her. “Mary, go and get something to drink for everyone,” he ordered.

“But Steven, the cake cutting...” Mary was about to finish her sentence when he interrupted. “Well, you won’t be able to see me cut the cake anyway. Everyone will be gathered around the table in a circle, and don’t forget that you’re in a wheelchair. Plus, if you’re there, the photos won’t turn out well. So, get the drinks, please?”

Mary was stunned. She didn’t expect Steven to react so rudely. At one point, she felt like yelling at him, but doing that with so many people around wasn’t really a good idea.

So, she went to the kitchen quietly and lifted the tray of juice glasses from the counter. It was heavy, but she managed to get it on her lap. Sadly though, she was just about to reach the table when her hand collided with the glasses and everything fell on the floor.

It made a loud sound, and everyone turned around to look at her. Claire dashed over to Mary. “Oh god, Mary. Are you okay?”

“Yes, Claire,” Mary replied. “I’m fine. Thank you.”

“Obviously, she’ll be fine,” Steven intervened. “After all, she has to sit all day in that stupid chair and do nothing.”

Mary’s eyes welled up with tears. “How could you say that, Steven? I did so much for you. I arranged this party so that you would feel happy. I know it’s hard for me to manage things after the accident, but you’re acting too mean now!”

“Oh, really?” Steven said firmly. “What can you even do, Mary? You can’t wash the clothes because you can’t reach the washing machine. You can’t cook either. So, who does the chores? Me! All you do is sit in front of a computer all day!”

Mary was speechless at this point. She didn’t utter a word. But Steven continued, “Why aren’t you saying anything now? Because the truth is out? Look at my disabled wife, everyone. She can’t walk, and now she can’t talk either.”

“Just stop, Steven,” Mary cried, “I don’t want to say anything because I feel awful about the way you’re talking. Please stop, for God’s sake.”

“No, I won’t,” Steven replied rudely. “Actually, you know what, I’m going to divorce you. What will you do then? Nobody’s going to marry you. You know that, right?”

Mary couldn’t believe her ears. She gently wiped her tears and said, “Everyone, I’m sorry about the trouble, but the party ends here. I don’t think we can continue this anymore.”

Everyone just gave a pitiful look at Mary and left. Mary didn’t say anything to Steven. She went to her room and locked the door.

When Steven awoke the next day, he thought he could bully Mary into doing the housework, so he went to her and said, “Get my breakfast fast. I’m planning on going out with my friends.”

Mary didn’t reply. She approached him quietly and handed him an envelope.

“What is this?” Steven asked. When Mary didn’t respond, he finally opened the envelope and saw divorce papers inside.

“I’m divorcing you. I have paid the loan, so this house is mine. Get your luggage and get out of my house,” Mary said firmly.

“Wait, what? You’re kidding, right?” Steven asked, shocked.

“No, Steven. I’m serious,” Mary replied. “You were the one who caused that accident. You are the one who’s ruining my life! The cab is waiting downstairs. JUST LEAVE!”

Steven didn’t say anything after that. He gave Mary a stern glance and left the house.

One year passed since that day, and neither of them contacted the other until one afternoon when Mary heard the doorbell.

A man named Pete opened the door. “Hey, is Mary at home?” Steven asked.

“I’m afraid I don’t recognize you. Who are you, and why are you asking about Mary?” Pete inquired.

“Well, I’m Steven. I’m Mary’s ...” Steven could hardly finish the sentence when Mary came. She was still in the wheelchair, but she looked healthier now.

“How are you, Mary? It’s so nice to see you,” Steven said. “I’m sorry I didn’t contact you even once. It’s been quite a struggle for me. I don’t have a job. I don’t have a place to stay either. Can I please stay here?”

“I’m sorry, but I don’t know you,” Mary said after a brief pause. “I live here with my husband, Pete, and my three children. And we don’t give outsiders a place to stay.” She then looked at Pete and said, “Honey, please close the door.”

In the end, Steven got what he deserved.

What can we learn from the story?

  • If you do wrong to others, you’ll be punished for it sooner or later.
  • A person’s truthfulness is identified only in difficult times.
