I Became My Sister's Servant after I Said That Her Husband Was Betraying Her – Story of the Day

Kelly found out that her sister's husband was lying to her and told her the truth. But the price she had to pay for telling the truth to her toxic sister was to become her servant.

One day after school, I went to my sister’s to visit my nephews and I saw something I wish I would have never seen. I caught her husband with another woman.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. When he saw me, he jumped out of bed and with a closed fist he threatened me: “If you tell my wife anything, you’re going to regret it for the rest of your life… I’ll leave her penniless… And you? I won’t even say what I’m doing to you.”

I was so scared. I didn’t know what to do and had no one to talk to about it either. I spent two weeks in doubt. The only thing I could think of was the kids. They had two little boys who I loved with all of my heart and if something happened to them, I’d feel terrible.

In the meantime, Jack became shameless -- has he got any shame in the first place? I mean, the man must’ve been out of his mind. So he started to ask me for favors. “Kelly, you must cover me when I go to my lover. You don’t want to leave your nephews without a dad.”

Over time, his arrogance overstepped the mark. I went to my sister and the first thing she said to me was, “Jack said he won’t be home tonight because he’s taking you to a party. Kelly, you’re taking advantage of his kindness!”

“Really?” I thought. “OK, I can’t do this anymore, Jenny,” I told my sister. “I’ve got to tell you something. Jack is cheating on you.” And I told her everything.

On that same day, Jenny kicked him out of the house. I thought I did the right thing but she started complaining and blaming me for their break-up then demanded I help her take care of the kids.

“You should move in with me and help me with the kids," she told me.

I decided to tell my parents all about it. But Jenny was their favorite child and I wasn’t surprised when they took her side. “It would have been better if you’d held your tongue,” they said.

The pressure was too much for a teenage girl like me with no support whatsoever, so I couldn’t resist it and agreed to help my sister.

I thought it would be a temporary measure but my sister took advantage of the situation. I was the house cleaner, babysitter, and kids’ teacher while she went out shopping or to the salon. Two years passed and nothing changed.

I dared to question her or say something and she’d say things like, “You owe me this, you wrecked my marriage,” or “I have no husband to support me because of you.”

My dream was to go to college and become a doctor, so I found a part-time job as a waitress at the pub nearby the house. The shift was perfect and the salary would be enough for me to save most of it.

When Jenny found out about my job, she demanded half of my pay. “You’ve lived here for 2 years for free!” she reasoned.

She treated me like my free labor was nothing. What about the countless hours I spent babysitting her kids? Cleaning the whole house? Helping them with their homework?

There was only one way to get the hell out of this slavery lifestyle I put myself into. I’ve got the job and despite the fact that Jenny put spokes in my wheels, I could make enough money to move out.

And as soon as I did, the woman started to call me and complain about how miserable she was without her free maid. “I have no help with my kids and my home! My family is broken and I never get a break!”

I was sick and tired of Jenny’s manipulation. Once again, I tried to talk to my parents and see if they could understand me. I told them about my idea of ending contact with Jenny but they talked me out of it. “She is your sister after all!” they said.

At first, I thought they were right. But after what happened next, I knew that manipulation and cunningness could not be justified, no matter what. Just because she’s my sister doesn't mean she can do whatever she wants. No, not at all!

In our last meeting, Jenny came up with a master plan. “I want to be a foster mom of a teen!” She was just talking about this thing of being a foster mom without giving further details. But I had a bad feeling and I knew her intentions weren’t good… So, I pressed her for more details.

“That sounds interesting, Jenny. Tell me more about it,” I said.

Then she started to reveal her evil plan. “In exchange for a roof over his head and free food, the teen must babysit my kids and do all the housework!”

She continued, “I don’t have much space in my house but I think they could sleep in the garage… And I don’t have to pay them!”

I was horrified by this idea but Jenny didn’t listen to me. Instead, she kept going. “As soon as they turn 18, I’ll sign up for another foster kid!”

Two months later a social worker showed up at my house and without hesitation, I told her all about Jenny’s plan.

When Jenny found out that her application was turned down because of her plan, she called me furious. “How could you do that to me?? After everything I’ve done for you, you’re ungrateful! I hate you!”

My parents didn’t support me. Again. Even after everything Jenny had done, they took her side. But I don’t regret what I did. I could finally set myself free from an abusive and toxic relationship. I know that sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing is the same thing.

What can we learn from this story?

1. Manipulation can happen everywhere. When someone has been suffering manipulation or emotional abuse for so long it can be hard to identify it. Emotional abuse among family members is a thing, and Kelly stood up for herself and made the right decision.
2. The truth always comes out. Kelly stopped another child from being exploited just like her by telling the truth. She didn’t have any support but she knew it had to be done.
