Unpacking the Revelations Made in Demi Lovato's 'Dancing With the Devil' Documentary
Demi Lovato's journey as a singer, songwriter, and actress has been highly successful. However, the Disney alum made some shocking revelations in their 'Dancing With the Devil' Documentary, which was released on YouTube earlier this year.
The four-episode series unearthed bleak details from Lovato's personal life, including their drug overdose, sexual assault, and journey to sobriety. The 28-year-old star has been brutally honest in their second documentary, sharing their struggles as a teenager and young woman.
The "Camp Rock" star's documentary was originally set to be released in July 2018, but due to their OD, it was delayed. Lovato even admitted that the original documentary, which followed the star on their "Tell Me You Love Me" world tour, didn't contain the complete details. They said:
Lovato also added that all the omitted parts from the original documentary accumulated in effect and ultimately led to their drug overdose and subsequent events. They also said:
“In that documentary, I was allowing the camera to see the tip of the iceberg. I wasn’t showing them what I was doing behind closed doors. … anytime that you suppress a part of yourself, it’s gonna, like, overflow at some point."
The two-time Grammy-nominated singer also revealed details about her relapse, coping with eating disorders, and being raped as a teenager. Lovato shared that she had a broken relationship with her abusive father, late Patrick Lovato, who died in 2013.
The pop artist further revealed that she was a victim of sexual assault twice, on the night of her 2018 OD by her drug dealer and when she was 15 years old by a fellow teenager. Regarding her 2018 overdose, she said:
“When I woke up in the hospital, they asked if we had had consensual sex. It wasn’t until a month after the overdose that I realized, You weren’t in any state of mind to make a consensual decision.”
Lovato also shared that she went "legally blind" following her July 2018 drug overdose, suffered a heart attack, three strokes, pneumonia, asphyxiation, and multiple organ failure. The Disney alum's sobriety journey has clearly been full of turmoil, but she proved herself to be a tough warrior.
