When a TikToker showed viewers how to make a watermelon pizza, the popular restaurant, Dominos, also decided to try it. While some love it, others call it an acquired taste.
When Oliver Paterson created the watermelon pizza, he might not have expected it to intrigue millions of viewers, but it did. It even caught the attention of the Australian Dominos Pizza.
They tried their hand at the unique invention this month. Captioned, "Y’all keep asking us for a low carb option," the pizza chain also got people talking. Their version featured tomato sauce and pepperoni slices placed on top of the pink fruit.

AN ACQUIRED TASTE
While Dominos thinks the meal "might be an acquired taste," according to their video, Paterson shared a few details on how to make the perfect watermelon pizza.
He stated that barbecue sauce and chorizo are his toppings of choice. He also added that getting "key details wrong" will result in a soggy mess that is unpleasant to eat.

RECREATING THE MEAL
Paterson explained that people wanting to recreate the meal must remember to cook the watermelon first before adding the toppings. This gets rid of excess moisture, and he also emphasized the sauce that is used.
"It’s very vital to use BBQ sauce rather than marinara/tomato. BBQ is already a tried and tested flavor combination with watermelon. Tomato (I haven’t tried myself but would assume) simply does not work."

Paterson was unsurprised that people who made a different version of his recipe did not enjoy it. He expressed that there are an array of viewers who did enjoy the unique dish.
According to Patterson, they appreciated the "sweet and smoky ... fatty salty richness" that came along with the meal. His inspiration for this pizza came thanks to a show he watched on Netflix.
INSPIRATION FOR THE MEAL
A contestant on "Crazy Delicious" won people over with their mix of barbeque and watermelon, so his idea was born. He expressed: "The judges really liked it, so I decided to recreate it myself."
Paterson opted to put his own twist on the meal. He knew the dish would garner a lot of responses, but the millions of views still bowled him over. He said: "I half expected it to cause a bit of controversy but didn’t expect it to go as far as it did."
Some users were impressed and asked if they could place an order for one of these meals. Others commended Dominos for trying unique pizza toppings but overall, people suggested they stick to the basics in the future.
