Two cruel mothers with too much time on their hands ganged up to mock a girl who decided to attend her prom wearing a male suit indicative of her unique fashion style. They learned their lesson.

Jane was a 16-year-old girl with a unique fashion sense and she was very excited about going to prom because she had many ideas of how she would like to look.

When the event was just a week away, she petitioned her mother to go with her to a store to shop for her attire. She was very nervous about the entire ordeal because she was afraid that other people would laugh at her choices.

Luckily her mother was right there to offer her encouragement as well as recommendations. "Honey, you'll look wonderful no matter what you put on," she said with seriousness. "You have my good looks."

"But what if people don't like it?" she asked. "I'll be the odd one out."

"Baby, if people don't like it, they can stop staring at you," her mother replied. "Always remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

"OK momma, I believe you."

"As you should, I will never lead you astray. Now about that dress, I think a nice dinner gown will be perfect for the occasion."

Even as her mother spoke, Jane was already deciding what she would wear and it was not a mundane dinner gown. She left her mom to wander at the suit section and came away with a tuxedo that fit her perfectly and a bow tie.

"How do I look?" she asked her mother as she tried it on in the changing room.

"Oh honey," her mother said. "You look so much like your grandmother! She also loved suits and like her, you look very beautiful in it."

Her father also thought the same thing. In a world that put a lot of emphasis on hive thinking, he wanted his daughter to celebrate her individuality as much as possible.

On the day of the prom, Jane did her make up and dressed up in her tuxedo. Her parents dropped her off at school and bid her an enjoyable evening before zooming off happily.

When Jane stepped inside the auditorium the school had allocated for the event, it seemed like time stopped and everyone, including her crush, the handsome Evan, had their eyes on her.

She looked completely different from the rest of the girls. After a second, all eyes were averted and things returned to normal. However trouble started brewing when two mothers approached her.

They did not like her outfit and had made it their duty to let her know. "Hey suit girl," one called her. "Stop that," the other said. "Her name is tomboy."

They both laughed at that and went on to ridicule Jane about her outfit, diminishing her self confidence and making her feel incredibly self-conscious.

Jane found it hard to enjoy herself after that so she texted her mother, begging her to pick her up earlier than they planned. She left in tears, which did not go unnoticed by her peers.

The event proceeded regardless. After she left, the competition for the night's awards began in earnest but when all the contestants were lined up, the two cruel mothers realized that their daughters were wearing the same dresses, making them look like copies of each other.

It led to a fight between the two women who were unsatisfied with the fact that their daughters did not stand out. Meanwhile, at home, Jane was having a discussion with her mother.

"Do you think I need to change the way I dress?” she asked.

“No, you be who you are," her mom replied. "If anyone needs to change, it's the world."

"But I was ridiculed today because of it mom," Jane cried.

"Honey, don't let the negative emotions get to you, people will always have their own opinions. It is what you think that matters."

Jane felt better after their talk and she went to bed happily. The following day, she discovered she had won an award for best dressed during the prom.

Apparently, her classmates loved her outfit so much they voted for her. Many of them made it a point of duty to reach out to her just to compliment how stylish and amazing she looked.

What did we learn from this story?

  • If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. The two cruel women had nothing nice to say about Jane's outfit and had opted to ridicule her anyway. It affected her self-esteem and robbed her of the fun she could have had at the event, but in the end, she won because her friends loved her outfit.
  • Individuality should be celebrated. Jane was able to stand out at her prom thanks to the streak of individuality she reflected in her fashion. Her parents could have snuffed it out with what they thought she should wear, but rather than do that, they encouraged her, and it went a long way.
