There's something special about true friendship, which is why it's so hard to find. Many people long for it, but few find it. However, for those who are lucky enough to experience it, some make the mistake of wanting it to be more than what it is, and that's when the problems begin.

The global pandemic heavily impacted Reddit user throwaway2020wedding's wedding plans. She was forced to have it at a courthouse with just her fiancé and their two best friends. However, a week before she tied the knot, her best friend gave her an unexpected piece of news.

HER BEST FRIEND WAS JEALOUS OF HER FIANCÉ
The Original Poster (OP) noticed that her friend liked to take the occasional jab towards her fiancé, but things became worse on the days leading up to the wedding. Her best friend made persistently rude remarks about her fiancé, and the Redditor started to worry.
She didn't think that her best friend meant what she had said and tried very hard to keep her as part of their ceremony. The two women had known each other for most of their lives, and the OP wanted her friend to be a part of her big day. Then, her best friend snapped and said something unexpected. In her post, she explained:

The OP didn't know how she was meant to react to that. She loved her best friend, but in a purely platonic manner. Her friend had also claimed to be "asexual," which made the confession even more surprising.
But her best friend was adamant that her feelings were genuine. She had been holding on to them for a very long time, and as the wedding approached, she couldn't keep them to herself anymore. The Redditor tried to see if her friend had made a mistake, but she didn't. It was clear that she wanted to be with the Redditor.

JEALOUSY CAN DESTROY A FRIENDSHIP
The Redditor didn't intend to break her best friend's heart, but her hands were tied. Not only was she about to get married in a few days, but she just didn't feel the same way. The OP tried to keep things civil and let her down gently, but that wasn't easy.
Her friend had been holding on to these feelings for a very long time in the hope that she'd get her fairytale ending. But when she saw the OP prepare to walk down the aisle with someone else, she couldn't take it anymore. She resented him because he had what she wanted. The OP knew that she needed to make a difficult decision.

The OP then told her friend that, "if she is so upset about the wedding, I don’t want her there." This only helped add fuel to the fire. Not only was her best friend upset about what she had just heard, but she also became quite hysterical. She couldn't accept what was unfolding right in front of her eyes.
The OP said that she "freaked" when she heard the ultimatum. She tried to guilt-trip the OP into changing her mind and said she was only kicking her out of the wedding because she was gay. However, the OP insisted that that wasn't the case, but instead, she didn't appreciate how her friend treated her future husband.

ONCE BROKEN, FRIENDSHIP IS HARD TO REPAIR
After spending some time thinking about what happened, the OP updated her post. She told the community that she finally decided to reach out to her friend. Her friend sent her countless messages the entire time, which she never replied to, but when she finally did, something changed.
Her friend ultimately started ignoring her. The Redditor was willing to allow her friend to come to the wedding on the basis that she accepted that they would be nothing more than friends. But her best friend couldn't accept that and chose to give her the cold shoulder instead. The OP hoped that she would reply, but she never did.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU HAVE FEELINGS FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND?
In a similar story, a Quora user asked the forum, "I love my best friend (both girls). What should I do?". As it turns out, this happens quite often in friendships, and the user wanted to know how to address the issue. Fortunately, some of the community members gave some helpful responses.
A user named Pam Doodley suggested that love doesn't always have to be romantic. She went on to add,
"You can love your best friend just like you love a family member. If you are having romantic feelings about your friend and you know she doesn’t feel the same way, you need to talk to her and tell her how you feel. If the feeling is not mutual, move on and find someone else who shares your feelings. You can still be friends, just not lovers."
Other users told her to introspect and really look at why she felt that way. They also advised her to assess the possible impact the news may have on their friendship. If she's convinced that it's worth taking the risk, then she should follow her heart.
Would you confess your romantic feelings to your friend knowing that you might lose them forever? Not many people can honestly answer this question because it isn't always that simple. It's hard to know what the right thing to do in this scenario would be. What would you do? Leave a comment and let us know.
