THE DAUGHTER'S SPINE-CHILLING EXPERIENCE

Three-year-old Jayden was playing with her toys and having fun in her room when she heard a voice talking to her. The little girl was confused and immediately told her parents about the incident.

Jo and John were working in their study downstairs when their child called for them. Jayden told them something unbelievable that sent shivers down their spine.

The mother recalled: "[Jayden] said the 'voice is talking to me,' [and I] said, 'the voice is talking to you, what's going on?' And she said the man said, 'Jayden, I love you.' And I said, 'what?'"

THEY TRIED TO MAKE SENSE OF THE MYSTERY

The parents tried to make sense of the incident and remembered that Jayden's grandmother mentioned she heard a voice talking upstairs. However, they didn't think much of it at the time.

While Jo and John did not hear the man's voice firsthand, they were appalled and believed their daughter's story which remained the same consistently.

They believed it was neighbors speaking outside or noise from a stuffed animal—but they were wrong. When their daughter pointed to where the voice came from, they were shocked.

THE MALE VOICE CAME FROM A DEVICE

Jayden pointed to a gift the couple received for their youngest child's baby shower a few months prior. Jo shared it was a Taococo branded WiFi-connected camera that was reportedly sold on Amazon by Fredi.

The couple noted that the camera they used as a baby monitor for six months had changed angles and made curious resets. However, like many parents, they never imagined an external party was controlling it.

Security expert, Theresa Payton, noted that people often don't think about the safety of their devices. She said:

"Parents have the assumption that these devices should just be secure. The fact is that these are still so easy to get access to."

THEY BELIEVED THE CAMERA WAS HACKED

While Jo and John did not hear the man's voice firsthand, they were appalled and believed their daughter's story, which remained the same consistently. Jo added: "I instantly wanted to throw up. My heart was in my throat."

The parents discovered various reports that alleged the Fredi cameras had issues. They believed their device was hacked, contacted Seattle police, and filed a statement with the FBI.

A nonprofit internet access group, Mozilla Foundation, warned:

"There is a lot of anecdotal evidence out there demonstrating these baby cameras are regularly and routinely hacked."

THE FAMILY FELT VIOLATED BY A STRANGER

Jo and John felt violated and were concerned about their child's safety. While the device had been unplugged and was no longer being used, they could not shake their worry.

The anxious mother said: "Someone was in our daughter's room, basically [watching] her." The couple didn't know what the stranger hoped to achieve with their actions and they were unsettled thinking about the ordeal.

Jo stated:

"I don’t know what all they saw, what they got from that. Is it the fear alone they're enjoying? It’s just so unsettling to not know."

THE COUPLE HOPED TO ALERT OTHER PARENTS

The couple hoped their story would alert other parents about the vulnerabilities and risks linked with cameras connected to the internet. Their device was affordable and purportedly had many good reviews.

They knew many families would consider purchasing the same camera, and it wasn't very comforting because they didn't believe it was secure or safe. Before others were hacked, or worse, they wanted to sound the alarm.

HELPFUL SECURITY TIPS TO AVOID HACKERS

There are many helpful tips to ensure strangers can't spy on you or your children. Online safety experts encourage parents to set up Google alerts to notify them when devices are vulnerable.

They also highlighted the importance of using encrypted Wi-Fi with firmware that is up to date. Security expert, Daniel Eliot, added:

"Anything that is connected to the internet is an open window into your privacy. That’s why you should limit how many windows you open into your life."

PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE STRONG PASSWORDS

Using strong passwords is another essential tip that will thwart potential hackers and keep devices safe. Parents who change their codes regularly are guaranteed extra peace of mind as this measure makes it tricky for hackers to gain access.
