Dern spoke about the movie, saying it was ahead of its time when it came to Dr. Ellie Sattler. Looking back on one of Dr. Sattler's more potent lines in the film, "Woman inherits the earth," the seasoned actress said:

“It's really moving. A lot of women in tech and science point to a similarity."

But, she and Neill did reflect on the fact that their two-decade age gap was not forward-thinking. They stated that it most likely would have been looked down upon in current society, but they thought nothing of it at the time.
