When Meghan Markle was set to join the Royal Family by marrying Prince Harry, one person, Duchess Camilla, appeared to welcome her with open arms. Earlier in Meghan and Camilla's relationship, they were said to have "genuine affection" toward each other.

Their link was due to their shared interests and common backgrounds: they were both divorcees, were not of royal blood, and were both outsiders in the Royal Family. After the pair's engagement was announced, Camilla addressed an important question.

When asked on November 28, 2017, how she felt about her stepson's engagement to Meghan, the Duchess of Cornwall had the most endearing response. Prince Charles's wife and Harry's step-mother said:

Camilla noted how having some good news was an absolute joy amid a climate of bad news. When a bystander shared how they saw Meghan as intelligent, lovely, and an asset to the Royal Family, the Duchess of Cornwall replied: "She's a star."

Harry's soon-to-be wife and Camilla bonded over their "shared a love of fine wine and yoga." According to the Daily Mail, before Harry and Meghan married, Charles' wife tried to help the prince's bride adjust to becoming a royal.

She allegedly invited Meghan for a private lunch and described how the press had treated her after Princess Diana's death. Camilla reportedly explained how she'd coped with the spotlight and pressure.

She allegedly advised Meghan to instead focus on the positives of her new role and "ride out the storm" of any negative press. A friend of Meghan's later revealed how grateful she was for the support from Camilla but failed to heed it.

Ahead of Meghan and Harry's May 2018 royal wedding, sources shared how Camilla played a crucial role. She allegedly guided her husband towards "the right thing to do," leading Charles to take on an important part.

When Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, failed to arrive in London to walk his daughter down the aisle, the Prince of Wales stepped in. An insider said the whole thing wouldn't have happened if Camilla, who was "family orientated," hadn't stepped in to help.

After their wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first public appearance was at a Buckingham Palace garden party. The event was meant to celebrate Charles' charity work ahead of his 70th birthday.

The occasion happened to be Meghan's first one as a member of the Royal Family. Camilla appeared to put her at ease as they got along quite well, and at one point, the duo shared their humor as Harry fought off a bee while giving a speech.

At one point, the Duchess of Cornwall was seen holding Harry's wife's hand, signaling how Meghan had been welcomed into the family. Royal watchers thought it also showed how the new duchess was now "one of us."

In November 2018, a friend claimed Camilla and Meghan got along like "aces." The source alleged that the pair liked each other, had support and genuine warmth, and the Duchess of Cornwall was very helpful to her new step-daughter.

Later, after the birth of Archie, the Sussexes appeared in an ITV documentary where they revealed that they weren't coping with the intense publicity. Meghan even claimed, "not many people have asked if I'm ok."

The Duchess of Cornwall's friends revealed weeks later that she served as a "pillar of support" to the Sussexes after the documentary caused a fallout. A source alleged that Camilla was unaware of how much the couple was suffering.

Charles' wife wanted everyone to get along and be happy and was reportedly quite fond of Meghan. Not long afterward, the Sussexes and Camilla attended a joint engagement at the Field of Remembrance Service at Westminster Abbey.

Sadly, things started to fall apart for Camilla and Meghan when the latter allegedly outshined the former. Harry's wife had reportedly pledged not to overshadow Camilla's speech on domestic violence in London.

She'd planned for almost a year to give a powerful address at the 10th anniversary of the Women of the World Festival. Instead, on the same day, Meghan allegedly insisted to have her photos at a theater appearing in newspapers, therefore taking the attention from Camilla.

The move "sparked fury" and left the Duchess of Cornwall "very upset." From that point onward, things between the two former outsiders seemed to go from bad to worse, but Charles' wife still appears to have a soft spot for the Sussexes.

CAMILLA'S CURRENT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SUSSEXES

In 2020, Harry and his wife announced they were stepping back from their senior royal roles as they sought independence. The couple and their son eventually relocated from the UK to the US, where they now live.

In March 2021, the Sussexes had a tell-all interview for CBS with Oprah Winfrey that left the Royal Family reeling. The couple openly criticized the royals and partly blamed them for deciding to step back from their duties.

The interview left Charles and Camilla quite upset, with Harry claiming his father had stopped taking his phone calls and the family cut him off financially. A friend thought Camilla would never forgive Meghan for what she and her husband did to Charles.

In 2022, Tom Bower, a British journalist, and author, alleged there'd never been any "common ground" between Camilla and Meghan. Bower claimed that the truth was Harry's wife "never liked Camilla."

The writer said Charles's wife had always been suspicious of the Duchess of Sussex from the onset. The Duchess of Cornwall reportedly couldn't believe the former actress would sacrifice her independence and career to be a silent team player in the Royal Family.

According to author Christopher Andersen, the announcement blindsided [Prince] Harry and his older brother Prince William.

Despite all the claims, Camilla publicly showed off her and Charles's Clarence House home; a photo in the living room sparked conversation. The image perched there showed Charles walking Meghan down the aisle on her wedding day.

On March 8, 2022, she held a reception at home for members of Britain's rowing Team ExtraOARdinary where the photo was slightly visible. One of Harry also stood on a table, showing how Camilla still held space for her stepson and step-daughter.

According to Page Six, the Duke of Sussex still hasn't warmed up to Camilla, his father's mistress when Charles was married to Diana. Harry allegedly hasn't entirely accepted his step-mother especially knowing Diana was the one meant to become queen one day.

Reports state that Diana's second son would always see Camilla as the woman who caused his parent's divorce. In February 2022, the Queen announced that Camilla would be titled the Queen Consort when Charles ascended the throne.

According to author Christopher Andersen, the announcement blindsided Harry and his older brother Prince William. The Queen's decision allegedly drove "a wedge" between the generations at the palace.
