When Meghan Markle was set to join the Royal Family by marrying Prince Harry, one person, Duchess Camilla, appeared to welcome her with open arms. Earlier in Meghan and Camilla's relationship, they were said to have "genuine affection" toward each other.

Their link was due to their shared interests and common backgrounds: they were both divorcees, were not of royal blood, and were both outsiders in the Royal Family. After the pair's engagement was announced, Camilla addressed an important question.

She allegedly advised Meghan to instead focus on the positives of her new role and "ride out the storm" of any negative press. A friend of Meghan's later revealed how grateful she was for the support from Camilla but failed to heed it.

After their wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first public appearance was at a Buckingham Palace garden party. The event was meant to celebrate Charles' charity work ahead of his 70th birthday.

The occasion happened to be Meghan's first one as a member of the Royal Family. Camilla appeared to put her at ease as they got along quite well, and at one point, the duo shared their humor as Harry fought off a bee while giving a speech.

At one point, the Duchess of Cornwall was seen holding Harry's wife's hand, signaling how Meghan had been welcomed into the family. Royal watchers thought it also showed how the new duchess was now "one of us."

In November 2018, a friend claimed Camilla and Meghan got along like "aces." The source alleged that the pair liked each other, had support and genuine warmth, and the Duchess of Cornwall was very helpful to her new step-daughter.

Charles' wife wanted everyone to get along and be happy and was reportedly quite fond of Meghan. Not long afterward, the Sussexes and Camilla attended a joint engagement at the Field of Remembrance Service at Westminster Abbey.

Sadly, things started to fall apart for Camilla and Meghan when the latter allegedly outshined the former. Harry's wife had reportedly pledged not to overshadow Camilla's speech on domestic violence in London.

She'd planned for almost a year to give a powerful address at the 10th anniversary of the Women of the World Festival. Instead, on the same day, Meghan allegedly insisted to have her photos at a theater appearing in newspapers, therefore taking the attention from Camilla.

The move "sparked fury" and left the Duchess of Cornwall "very upset." From that point onward, things between the two former outsiders seemed to go from bad to worse, but Charles' wife still appears to have a soft spot for the Sussexes.

According to author Christopher Andersen, the announcement blindsided [Prince] Harry and his older brother Prince William.

According to author Christopher Andersen, the announcement blindsided Harry and his older brother Prince William. The Queen's decision allegedly drove "a wedge" between the generations at the palace.
