Haines and Shifrin met through an internet dating site, OkCupid, which is both rare and modern. The well-known news presenter admitted that she had joined an online dating service to find a suitable companion.
After she made her profile, Haines and the handsome lawyer quickly exchanged messages. During their first talk, Shifrin had no clue she was a journalist and a well-known television host.
The couple agreed to meet in person after six months of chatting on the dating site. Haines revealed that she fell hard and fast in love with Shifrin, several years younger than her. She described Shifrin as a "super cute" man.
The twosome also had a memorable and amusing engagement, much like their first conversation. Shifrin proposed to Haines at 6:30 in the morning. The lawyer said of his awkward proposal:
"So I literally got up, crawled out of bed in my pajamas, and got on one knee on the floor next to the bed, and proposed awkwardly and without much charm at all."
Shifrin said he apologized to Haine for proposing awkwardly and for not being able to give her a "better story." For her part, Haine remarked that his romantic gesture at the moment was unforgettable.
Haines, 37 at the time, married Shifrin in November 2014. The TV show presenter previously shared her views on getting married and pregnant in her late 30s, feeling that it was a smart choice.
She revealed that she did not want to marry at such a young age and did not want to settle down right away. Haines, a bold and practical careerwoman, expressed a need for someone to grow and evolve with her.
Haines has been realistic about marriage, indicating that it is not all rainbows and butterflies. For her, this kind of commitment is hard work. She has opened up about how she and her husband are a work in progress. She said:
"That was more important to me than anything. I found that in Max, and not because he all the sudden came along on a horse, but we had a common vision. I wanted my equal and someone that could match me in a shared vision, and that's what I found."
Haines said that she and her husband are mature enough to be upfront about their relationship and would work together to keep their marriage intact, such as by attending couples therapy. She believes that going to therapy with a partner is helpful for everyone.
In addition to facing criticism, Haines struggled mentally.
