Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz's Reddit Posts Reveal What Was Really Happening Inside Her Marriage Before the Tragedy

Authorities continue investigating the deaths of Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, her six children, and her husband after new reports highlighted Reddit posts in which Mandy described working through marital struggles years before the tragedy.

The deaths of Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, her husband, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, and their six children have left many wondering what life was like behind the family's seemingly happy public image.

According to PEOPLE, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said Kristopher fatally shot Mandy and the couple's six children, who ranged in age from 5 to 15, on July 24 before turning the gun on himself.

As reported by the outlet, Kristopher worked at the American Heart Association, where he served as the organization's national vice president of sales and marketing, supporting the division responsible for CPR and first aid training and products.

The organization shared a statement with PEOPLE confirming that Kristopher worked remotely for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until July 2026, when his employment ended.

The statement continued, "As an organization with professional staff who are dedicated to helping others, we are devastated by the news out of Grand Haven, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragedy."

Days after the tragedy, a Reddit account matching Mandy's personal details has since drawn widespread attention after The Detroit News reported that the account's authenticity was independently verified by matching information including the couple's ages, marriage timeline, children, occupations, and residence.

A Reddit Account Painted a Different Picture Than the Family's Public Life

Across dozens of posts written in 2024, Mandy described a marriage she said had been tested by infidelity, counseling, and years of rebuilding trust. She wrote that she met Kristopher when she was an intern at the company where he worked.

"He was divorced and older than me … fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern," she wrote. Mandy also reflected on the emotional toll she said the affair had taken on her.

"After about a year of self-loathing, I remember crying and looking at myself in the mirror and realizing how [expletive] it was that I was the one who was living so miserably because of what he did. I finally realized that I had been the only person who has ever showed up for myself my whole entire life."

She Said Her Children Were the Reason She Stayed

In the same collection of Reddit posts, Mandy said she chose to continue working on the marriage because of their children. She wrote:

"I kept telling myself, 'I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.' They have no idea — I faked it 'till we made it. We're in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it's still a fight to stay in a healthy place."

Elsewhere, Mandy described some of the challenges she said existed within the relationship. "We have six kids, so the idea of leaving is insanely terrifying," she wrote. "He's always had major red flags that I ignored due to my own trauma and anxious attachment."

She also wrote that the couple attended counseling and that rebuilding emotional safety remained difficult years after the affair. "For me, 'safety' is the ability to trust that (he) will not get angry or defensive when I'm triggered, and will help to carry me through it," Mandy wrote.

She Opened Up About How the Affair Changed Her Self-Image

According to Us Weekly, Mandy also wrote that the affair deeply affected the way she viewed herself. "I was five babies in, and was actually not in bad physical shape, but I was in the trenches of little kids, and just couldn't be who I was before," she wrote.

She said she spent one of Kristopher's work bonuses on Botox, Invisalign, hair extensions, and new clothes because she wanted to feel "pretty." Mandy added that she "lost tons of weight during the aftermath" but "still internally blamed myself for not being 'enough' of what he wanted."

In another Reddit discussion reported by Us Weekly, Mandy said Kristopher had undergone an upper blepharoplasty procedure. At the same time, she postponed her own planned breast reduction because she could not yet afford it.

She also wrote that forgiveness took years and admitted she still struggled with anger toward the woman involved in the affair.

One Post Revealed Her Immediate Reaction After Learning About the Affair

Among the Reddit posts was one in which Mandy responded to a discussion asking whether people became physical after discovering infidelity.

"Yes. I shoved him. I don't feel bad still," she wrote. "He towers over me and destroyed me mentally. It felt like I was being assaulted and needed to fight back."

"I think it's a fight or flight thing," she added.

Their Social Media Still Showed a Happy Family

While Mandy's Reddit posts described private marital struggles, her public social media offered a very different picture. On April 7, she shared a TikTok post featuring Kristopher and their six children enjoying spring break together at a beach. A Journey That Reflected What Mattered Most to Mandy

The family's final weeks also included a trip that relatives later described as deeply meaningful. According to ClickOnDetroit, Mandy had taken her two adopted daughters back to China so they could reconnect with the country where they were born. During the visit, they traveled to Shanghai Disney and returned to the place where the girls had originally been adopted.

Her cousin, Emily Stoye Jones, said Mandy believed it was "critically important" that her daughters understand where they came from, appreciate their heritage, and feel proud of it.

Emily said that dream began when Mandy was in third grade after hearing a story about adopting a child from China, and Mandy told her mother she wanted to adopt a little girl from China one day.

Yahoo News also reported that Mandy described wearing traditional Hanfu clothing with her daughters as one of the "coolest" experiences of the trip. "What an awesome experience with my precious daughters," she wrote on July 16. "We are so proud of their Chinese heritage."

Before returning to Michigan, Mandy shared another TikTok documenting the family's time in Hangzhou. The video showed moments exploring shops, markets, food stalls, and local streets with her daughters.

Family Remembered Her as a Mother Who Put Her Children First

Despite Mandy's candid online reflections, Emily said relatives rarely saw signs of the struggles she described. "We may never know what her relationship was with her husband on a day-to-day basis," Emily said. "You never saw her sad. You never saw her upset. She just always looked on the bright side."

Emily described Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz as someone whose greatest joy was raising her children. "Mandy's lot in life was to be a mom," she said, adding that Mandy intentionally built a unique relationship with each of her six children and constantly looked for ways to create lasting memories with them.

According to Newsweek, Mandy also worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School in Grand Haven, where district officials later described the deaths as "a devastating incident and tragic loss for our community."
