In Hollywood, celebrity breakups often play out through public feuds, cryptic social media posts, and years of lingering resentment. However, this former couple took a very different path.

Although their marriage ended in divorce in 2016, Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose spent the years that followed building a relationship that many may never have expected.

Through separate interviews, they reflected on the difficult end of their marriage, the lessons they learned from the heartbreak, and the mindset that allowed them to build a successful co-parenting partnership.

Why Their Breakup Hurt So Much

Years after their split, neither Rose nor Khalifa minimized the emotional toll of their divorce. During an appearance on the "No Jumper" podcast in 2023, the former admitted she struggled for years after the relationship ended. "Oh, no, with Wiz, I cried for like three years straight," she said.

"That was the love of my life," she added. The model and entrepreneur recalled the heartbreak lingering after the marriage ended, describing moments when she would sit alone processing the loss while also navigating the reality of raising a child with her former husband.

Khalifa offered a similarly candid perspective during a 2024 appearance on Shannon Sharpe's "Club Shay Shay." Looking back, he said the breakup was especially difficult because of how close they had been throughout their relationship. He added:

"It was unfortunate that it didn't work out. That really sucked."

However, while both acknowledged the pain, neither framed the breakup as a failure. Instead, they described it as the beginning of a different chapter in their relationship.

How They Turned Heartbreak Into Successful Co-Parenting

Nowadays, Rose and Khalifa's relationship looks very different from the one they had as husband and wife. Asked about the secret to effective co-parenting, she revealed that the former couple now considers each other "best friends."

According to the model, their approach became much easier once they stopped focusing on each other's personal lives and concentrated solely on their son, Sebastian "Bash" Thomaz.

The arrangement extends beyond traditional co-parenting, as well. Rose said the family regularly spends holidays together, attends events as "a big family," and maintains a close bond centered around their son.

Rose explained that their deep connection never disappeared after the divorce. Instead, it evolved into something different.

Khalifa echoed that perspective. Although he admitted the transition was difficult initially, the rapper believes time allowed both of them to become better parents independently. "She's a great mother. She's a great person. I'm a great father. I'm a great person," he shared.

According to him, removing the complications of a romantic relationship allowed them to focus on making decisions that were best for their child rather than getting distracted by personal disagreements.

Why They Still Consider Each Other Soulmates

One of the most surprising revelations from Rose's interview was her belief that she and Khalifa remain soulmates despite no longer being together. "Wiz feels the same way. We've had this conversation," she shared.

Rose explained that their deep connection never disappeared after the divorce. Instead, it evolved into something different. In fact, the model believes that their bond is one of the main reasons they have remained so close.

Khalifa has expressed similar feelings in past interviews, according to Rose, and she suggested their mutual understanding of what they once shared helped them accept the reality of where their relationship stands today.

At the same time, she made it clear that recognizing someone as a soulmate does not necessarily mean a romantic reunion is inevitable, revealing:

"I'm the type of person, like, when I'm done, I'm done."

Letting Go of Ego and Welcoming New Partners

Another key factor in their success involved accepting new people into each other's lives. Rose spoke openly about Khalifa's longtime girlfriend, whom she described as "a sweetheart" and "amazing."

Rather than viewing a new partner as competition, the model said parents must let go of their insecurities for the benefit of their children. Drawing from her own experience growing up with stepparents, she explained why that perspective matters.

"You got to let go of your ego," Rose said. "Not think that this other person is going to take away the love that your child has for you."

Khalifa's current views on relationships suggest the experience also changed how he thinks about commitment.

The philosophy appears to have shaped the broader family dynamic she described throughout the interview. Rose even noted that the rapper treats her younger son from another relationship like family, despite not being his biological child.

For both parents, expanding the circle of support around their children became more important than dwelling on what their romantic relationship once was.

From Marriage to Friendship – What They Learned About Love

Perhaps the clearest example of how much their relationship evolved came from one of Khalifa's most memorable stories.

While speaking with Sharpe, the rapper revealed that he and Rose celebrated the finalization of their divorce together at a strip club. When the host expressed disbelief, the "Black and Yellow" rapper simply laughed and continued:

"Because we cool. We just can't be in a relationship together."

The outing even included the pair buying dances for one another, a moment that highlighted just how unconventional their friendship had become. Khalifa's current views on relationships suggest the experience also changed how he thinks about commitment.

Although he remains open to having a lifelong partner, he said he no longer has any interest in getting married again. "I'm just against the legal side of marriage," he explained.

The rapper even went so far as to say couples should spend ten years getting to know each other before considering marriage, arguing that relationships often reveal new challenges once finances, living arrangements, and long-term responsibilities enter the equation.

For him, the lessons learned from his marriage appear to have reshaped his perspective on what a successful partnership looks like.

A Different Kind of Success Story

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa's relationship may not have lasted forever, but both appear to view its ending differently than many celebrity couples do. Rather than allowing heartbreak to define them, they built a friendship rooted in mutual respect, honesty, and a shared commitment to their son.

Their story suggests that while not every romance is meant to last, some relationships can evolve into something equally meaningful once both people are willing to let go of their ego and focus on what matters most.
