A Regular Day at Work
Billy Mitchell worked at Big River Shipbuilders, a family-owned construction company in Vicksburg, Mississippi. On April 5, 2022, he was at the Yazoo River Diversion Canal on a salvaging trip with his co-workers when he stumbled upon something.
The astonishing discovery was special for the Dahls, but there was something that made it even more memorable.
He and his colleagues were salvaging sunken floats, smaller versions of a barge, when he made the strange discovery. Mitchell said he wasn't surprised he noticed something out of the ordinary because he always kept an eye out for unique stuff.
A Strange Find
But how unique was Mitchell's unexpected find? It turned out that the salvage diver had found a green glass bottle, which he said was floating above one of the barges, and eventually came to rest on the deck.
When he examined the bottle, his excitement knew no bounds — there was something inside it. Mitchell recalled:
"I was shocked and excited. You hear about messages in a bottle, but I never thought I'd find one in the canal over here."
Without wasting time, Mitchell said he grabbed the bottle and began thinking of a way to extract the message. The more he looked at the bottle, the more it piqued his curiosity because he had never seen anything like it in his 20 years of business.
Uncovering the Mystery
Mitchell said the bottle was completely intact and sealed when he found it. Eventually, he used shish kebab sticks to extract the note, which appeared to be fragile, faded, and torn. Thrilled to uncover the complete mystery and decipher the message, Mitchell shared the news with his boss, Brad Babb.
Together, the two men got down to work and began reconstructing the message. They were able to pick up a few things: it was written by a child from Oxford with the surname Tahl and appeared to be a part of his school assignment from 1989.
Delighted to play detective, Babb said he called multiple schools in the Oxford area, but nothing helped. Ultimately, he and Mitchell decided to use technology to get to the bottom of things. They shared the note's picture on social media with the caption:
"Today our Salvage crew found a bottle with the following message inside. Time has not been kind to the letter. We believe this was done by Oxford, MS student with the last name of Tahl back in 1989. We would love to let that person know we found it. Please spread the word and help us find this person."
An Unexpected Call
A few days after the Big River staff shared the picture, Dr. Eric Dahl from Oxford received an unexpected call. He was at church and picked up the call, thinking he was needed at the hospital. In reality, the universe needed him to see something completely different and astonishing.
When he ended the call, Eric related the conversation to his wife, Melanie Dahl. It turned out that a friend had seen the social media post and called to share the news. Shortly afterward, Melanie opened the post, saw the message, and commented:
"This was my son."
Eric and Melanie's son, Chris Dahl, was also flabbergasted when he learned about everything. He left another comment on the same post, which read, "This is crazy. Can't wait to hear more about how it was found (sic)."
Getting in Touch
In response, the Big River team requested the Dahls to get in touch as they wished to return the note to its rightful owner. Gradually, the mystery behind the message was also unraveled.
According to the Dahls, their other son and Chris's brother, Brian Dahl, had written the note in the bottle in 1989 at the age of 11. Born in 1977, Brian was the oldest son of the Dahls.
With a large portion of the handwritten note nearly destroyed and rendered illegible, only his name and a few other details were visible. But just one look at the paper was enough for the Dahls to know that it belonged to their beloved son.
Eric noted that the message was a part of a class assignment that Brian did as a sixth grader. "The fact it was my son who wrote that 33 years ago — what are the odds of that bottle being found," recounted a surprised Melanie.
A Lovely Boy
The Dahls described their elder son as a bright youngster who loved reading and playing chess. Melanie said her lovely boy was quick-witted and loved making people laugh. Brian's school teacher from sixth grade, Marth Burnett, explained that the assignment was done on a field trip.
She said the pupils wrote messages, enclosed them in bottles, and dropped them in Mississippi's Tallahatchie River. Burnett stated that one bottle was found in the late 1990s in Louisiana, making Brian's bottle the second to be discovered.
She described Brian as a promising youngster and said, "I think it brings him back to life in a way." The astonishing discovery was special for the Dahls, but there was something that made it even more memorable.
According to Eric and Melanie, Brian was an athlete who defeated cancer at one time but died in an accident at the age of 29 in 2007. "It was a gift from on high. We're a praying family, and this is a part of God's providence," expressed Eric.
Bringing Strangers Together
After recovering from the initial wave of shock and surprise, Eric called Babb at Big River and narrated that his late son had written the message. After a highly emotional conversation, the Dahls decided to meet the shipyard crew and bring their lovely boy's living memory home.
Finally, in August 2022, the Dahls and Big River team had a meeting unlike any other. They came together thanks to a message written by a youngster 33 years ago — a message that connected strangers and forged a beautiful bond.
As the Dahl family sat at the table with Mitchell and Babb on a hot and humid summer day, their hearts were filled with indescribable emotions.

Love Above All Else
Calling the occasion surreal and surprising, Eric shared, "Love never goes away." Mitchell also had something to say about the remarkable discovery:
"It was like a voice from Heaven. [Brian's] watching over his parents."
While this phenomenal story sounds like it came straight out of a fantasy novel or a movie, it shows that miracles happen every day. We are beyond elated that the Dahls were reunited with their son's heartwarming message from years ago.
