As Dr. Jo Wilson in "Gret's Anatomy," British actress Camilla Luddington plays a woman fleeing from a bad marriage to a nasty man. Still, her real life differs significantly from Shonda Rhimes' scripted world.

Camilla Luddington and her husband, Matthew Alan, have been happily married since 2019 and met many years before that when they were both hopeful young actors scrambling for auditions in Hollywood.

Camilla Luddington was born in the picturesque town of Ascot in the United Kingdom on December 15, 1983. At eleven, she was already studying the performing arts, and when her family moved to the United States when she was fourteen, it brought her one step closer to Hollywood.

Luddington went on to study at the New York Film Academy before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. Luddington got bit parts in movies and a few guest roles in TV series like "CSI" and "Days of Our Lives" before landing her breakthrough role.

Motherhood on-screen coincided with real life for Camilla Luddington.

Cast as Kate Middleton in the TV biopic "William & Kate: The Movie," Luddington played the British beauty who captured a prince and will one day be Queen. 2012 was Luddington's banner year, and she was cast in three of TV's hottest shows.

She worked on "Californication," where she played a nanny, and the vampire sizzler "True Blood," in which she portrayed a faery, and last but not least, "Grey's Anatomy," where Shonda Grimes picked her for Alex Karev's new love interest, Jo Wilson. Her husband, Matthew Alan, curiously worked on "Grey's Anatomy."

Who is Matthew Alan, Camilla Luddington's Husband?

Matthew Alan had no intention of becoming an actor. He wanted to be a teacher until he landed a Budweiser commercial alongside Stevie Wonder, which aired during the 2013 Superbowl. From that moment on, Alan confessed, his phone was ringing off the hook. His mom was not surprised and revealed:

"Since he was in kindergarten he liked being in front of a microphone or acting a little bit, pretending and stuff like that."

What started as pretend play has become a career as a respected actor in Hollywood, with an impressive list of credits as a guest actor that reads like a hit parade list of the best TV series over the last decade.

Among many others, Alan worked on "Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side," in 2007, and his character had a seven-episode arc; "Cold Case;" "The Forgotten;" "Sons of Anarchy;" "NCIS;" "Castle Rock;" and "13 Reasons Why."

More recently, he participated in the mini-series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," where he played police officer Joseph Gabrish. He even guested on "Grey's Anatomy" in 2017 and acted with his wife's on-screen husband, Alex Karev.

How Did Camilla and Matthew Meet?

Curiously enough, Alan and Luddington did not meet on set, although they first worked together in the 2010 short movie "The Filming of Shakey Willis." They met in a restaurant, but they weren't on a date.

Like many thousands of other struggling actors, Allan and Luddington were waiting on tables to make a living while waiting for the big break that would make them rich and famous. Ludington said:

“Way back in the day, we actually waited tables together when we first got to Los Angeles.”

Luddington's life and "Grey's Anatomy" are strangely synchronized. Alan proposed to Luddington two weeks after Alex Karev popped the question to Jo Wilson. It was New Year's Eve, and the actress accepted.

When Did Camilla and Matthew Marry?

"Grey's Anatomy" seems to have inspired Alan because when Luddington "married" her on-screen fiancé, he was demonstrably jealous and even showed up on set to see her in her bridal gown. Luddington shared:

"Matt came to visit the set and he stepped on and we were like, '[expletive]!' Because it was so gorgeous and they do weddings there and he was like, 'We could have done it here, but now you and Alex have taken it!'"

Alan needn't have worried. Their actual wedding was just as lovely and much more emotional. The two opted for an intimate ceremony with seventy guests, officiated by a close friend Shawn Aly, who spoke movingly about their relationship.

Luddington wore a stunning Mira Zwillinger couture gown made of hand-embroidered lace. The strapless dress flowed into a mermaid's tail and made Luddington look like a fairytale princess.

How Many Kids do Camilla and Matthew Have?

Motherhood on-screen coincided with real life for Camilla Luddington. While her character Jo Wilson adopted an orphaned baby, Luddington and Alan welcomed their second child together, Lucas, in August 2020.

The couple already shared a daughter Hayden, born on March 9, 2017, and when Lucas was born, she was just old enough to be excited by the idea of being a big sister. Luddington shared on Instagram:

"Matt and I are SOOO happy to announce the birth of our sweet baby BOY Lucas, otherwise known as my little lion."

Luddington fell pregnant with Hayden in her fifth season of "Gray's Anatomy," and show producer and creator Shonda Rhimes was thrilled for her. Luddington revealed:

“Shonda is a huge advocate for women being able to work and have families, so she was happy for me. She said that she loved ShondaLand babies and that if I needed anything to let her know.”
