The existence of Kelly remained private until 1993 when her college roommate sold the adoption story that got published in a tabloid magazine. At that time, Joni's daughter renamed Kilauren Gibb, had started searching for her biological parents.
After being separated for over 30 years, Joni reunited with Kilauren in 1997 after adoption and medical records connected them. The pair had a fantastic relationship. Joni expressed a joy she had never experienced before when she finally met her daughter.
