A Wisconsin family's grief has unfolded in the most heartbreaking way imaginable…but the most shocking detail in this case is not what you might expect at first.

As loved ones mourn 14-year-old Kuren Rein, the story only grows more disturbing the deeper it goes, with one alleged explanation and one chilling sentence taking center stage.

A Community in Shock

In the days after Rein's death, the public picture of the teen that emerged was one of a girl deeply loved by the people around her. A GoFundMe set up by loved ones described her passing as "the unimaginable loss of a beautiful 14-year-old life taken far too soon."

The fundraiser said the tragedy has left "a family, friends, and an entire community grieving in ways words cannot fully express." It also revealed another devastating layer to the story, saying supporters were rallying around Rein's brother, "a young man who has just lost his sister in a devastating and unthinkable way at the hands of their own mother."

The page explained that donations are meant to help ease funeral expenses so the grieving teen can focus on healing and remembering his sister.

"She [...] will be missed beyond measure," the message reads. "Her life mattered, and she deserves to be honored with dignity and care. We are asking for any support you can give—whether that is a donation, a share, or simply keeping this family in your thoughts and prayers. Every bit helps during this incredibly difficult time."

Thus far, of their $26,000 goal, over $19,000 has been raised by the community.

The heartbreak expressed in that GoFundMe message was echoed in a moving Facebook tribute shared by Melissa Johns on March 23. Johns reposted a collage of warm family photos showing Rein smiling alongside her mother, Tyiece Oninski, and other loved ones during their baptism gathering.

The images are especially painful to look at now. In them, Rein appears happy and close to her family, posing in white clothing with relatives beneath a celebratory banner. Alongside the photos, Johns wrote, "Ughhh 😥😢😭😭😳 Just why?!?😭😫 Rest peacefully Beautiful little Angel."

The Horrific Tragedy That Took Place

That raw reaction captured exactly what many people seem to be feeling about this case: disbelief, confusion, and a desperate search for answers.

Before this outpouring of sorrow, there were allegations that turned an already tragic story into something even more unsettling. According to the New York Post, Oninski of the Town of Turtle in Rock County allegedly called authorities on March 20 and confessed to killing her daughter, Rein, the night before.

During the reported 13-minute call, Oninski allegedly said she had acted to "protect her from somebody else."

At first, that phrase alone is eerie enough. But investigators say the explanation soon took a shocking turn. Per the outlet, Oninski later named Elon Musk as the perceived threat, allegedly claiming she killed her daughter to save her from him.

And it did not stop there… When dispatchers asked whether she wanted an ambulance, Oninski allegedly gave a response so cold it has become one of the most haunting details in the case:

"She's dead, honey. She needs a hearse."

Officers who responded reportedly found Rein dead inside the home from multiple stab wounds, with a knife nearby. The same report said Oninski was found with cuts to her neck and wrists in what investigators believe was an apparent suicide attempt.

Authorities also said she later tested positive for benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and THC. In another disturbing twist, the Post reported that while hospitalized, Oninski at one point asked officers whether she was in the news, and was disappointed to learn she was not.

That detail has only added to the sense of horror surrounding the case, which has left many struggling to understand how a family photo album full of smiles could be followed by such violence.

For now, what remains painfully clear is that a 14-year-old girl is gone, her loved ones are shattered, and a community is trying to make sense of something that may never fully make sense.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Rein's brother, their entire family, loved ones, friends, community, and all who knew and loved Rein as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Rein.
