Pfeiffer said she felt she could do it alone and wanted to do so because she "salivated" at the sight of a baby before she adopted her daughter, Claudia Rose. She said she considered all her options before welcoming her daughter.

When she thought about getting pregnant, she decided not to do it. Talking about her reasons for adopting her daughter instead of giving birth to a baby, Pfeiffer said:

"I just couldn't do it. I thought, 'I don't want some guy in my life forever who's going to be driving me nuts.'"

Kelley and Pfeiffer met when she was set up on a blind date with him. She was reluctant to meet him because she had terrible experiences on blind dates. Yet she agreed to go out with Kelley, who seemed to get along better with her sister. However, it turned out for the best.

Pfeiffer married her TV producer-writer husband, Kelley, in 1993. The wedding happened shortly after Pfeiffer began the adoption process for her daughter. The couple also welcomed a son in 1994.

The actress said that she hated the publicity that came with fame, and she constantly found it challenging to be in the public eye, so the couple ensured their wedding was a private, "peaceful" affair. The family and their 8-month-old daughter attended it.
