Shawn Mendes' Sister Is Popular on Social Media & Very Close with Her Only Brother – More about Aaliyah Mendes
With just under a million followers on Instagram, Aaliyah Mendes has grown her social media following after her internet popularity took off on Vine. While she is known as Shawn Mendes's sister and the pair share a close bond, the singer rarely appears on his sister's page.
While Shawn has become a household name for his chart-topping songs and his highly publicized former relationship with Camila Cabello, Aaliyah has cemented herself as well on social media.
While her largest following is on Instagram, Aaliyah has garnered thousands of fans on TikTok and Twitter too, from documenting her life as a former high school student and sharing pictures and videos of her high school sweetheart.
Shawn Mendes' Family
Shawn's mom, Karen, grew up in Toronto and welcomed her children there, but she was born in London. She is a real estate agent, and in 2017, Shawn revealed that he had gotten matching elephant tattoos with his mom. He said:
"I was trying to convince [my mom] to get a tattoo for a while, and this is kind of the only thing she would do because she's obsessed with elephants — and they're pretty cool animals actually if you read about them."
His dad, Manuel, is a native of Portugal who sells bar and restaurant supplies in Canada. In 2019, Shawn picked his dad as his date to the Grammys, and Manuel had a front-row seat to his son's live performance at the award show.
In May 2021, Shawn took to social media to share a throwback picture of his parents to honor his mom on Mother's Day and his father on his birthday. The last and youngest member of the Mendes family is Shawn's baby sister.
Inside Aaliyah Mendes' Life
Aaliyah was born in September 2003 in Canada. After joining Vines in July 2013, her internet popularity skyrocketed, and she amassed over one hundred thousand subscribers. Before Vines fell out of trend, Aaliyah had over two hundred thousand subscribers on the social media app.
She then moved to TikTok, where she had one hundred and one thousand followers at the time of writing. She had nine hundred thousand followers on Instagram at the time of publication and broadened her brand in September when she announced her partnership with Evolved by Bleached Tie Dye.
Aaliyah shared that she had spent months designing the hand-made clothing collection of her dreams. Having a large social media following meant she was rubbing shoulders with other social media personalities like Lyssa Shouse and Mahogany Lox.
Outside work, Aaliyah filled her page with pictures of her and her boyfriend, Jordan Savage. The couple met in high school, and in June, they celebrated their anniversary by the beach.
Aaliyah did not disclose their getaway location but wrote in the caption that they spent their time away from home. Like her older brother, Aaliyah has a close relationship with her parents. In March 2021, she shared a picture of her family, one of very few that featured Shawn, and in the caption, she wrote:
"To the people who mean the entire world to me, thank you for the unconditional support, care, and love you give me every single day."
What Did Shawn Mendes Say about His Only Sister?
Despite being a busy musician, Shawn showed family came first when he took time out of his schedule to return to Toronto to celebrate Aaliyah on big days like birthdays and graduation. On other occasions, he took to social media to give his sister a shoutout.
He honored her fifteenth birthday in 2018 and her sixteenth birthday in 2019 by posting throwback pictures of them when they were children. In 2019, when Shawn was asked about his Christmas holiday plans, he said:
"I'm really looking forward to spending time with my sister. She's a bit older now and really cool to hang out with. I feel like we have an awesome connection."
That same year, Aaliyah posted a rare picture of Shawn Mendes to her Instagram page in honor of his twenty-first birthday. She also appeared in his Netflix documentary, "Shawn Mendes: In Wonder," along with the rest of their family.
