Carrie Underwood Refused 1st Date with Spouse — In 14 Years of ‘Blessed’ Marriage They Go on Dates All the Time
Carrie Underwood was hesitant to go on a blind date with her now husband, but they had chemistry from the start. At first, it was a long-distance relationship and they had to call each other to talk. Now, they have two sons and he even gave her two cows.
When Carrie Underwoods' bassist, Mark Childers, suggested a meet-up with Canadian hockey player, Mike Fisher, the singer was a little more than skeptical. She had no intention of dating long-distance. Initially, she refused, since he was an athlete from a different country. Finally, though, she agreed tentatively.
To keep things casual, she arranged that they meet backstage after one of her concerts. The singer suggested meeting in a place where she felt comfortable, partly to keep the encounter from being awkward since she wasn't very keen on the blind date.
Initially, Underwood thought, "I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let's get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome." That was until they met after her show, and things went surprisingly well. They got along, and the physical chemistry between them was through the roof. She felt he was the man she was meant to be with.
They had fun together the entire night, and at one point, Underwood decided the time had come to take the plunge.
But both had incredibly busy lives. Underwood was constantly traveling around for tours or writing music while Fisher played hockey in Canada, which meant he spent most of his time training. So, the two found little time for each other, and they didn't see each other for a long time.
Instead, they called one another whenever they found a gap in their busy schedules and slowly built up a friendly relationship. Underwood found it worthwhile to have a long-distance relationship in the end, but if she hadn't agreed to their first meeting, she might not have met her future husband.
A Real First Date
For three months, the only contact Underwood and Fisher had was over the phone. The two weren't even in the same country, which meant driving over for an impromptu visit wasn't really an option. Eventually, after a long time of only communicating by texting or calling each other, they would get together. Underwood commented:
"It's fun to miss somebody. We talked on the phone for almost three months before we actually got together. That was good for us. Then our first real date was on New Year's Eve, and our first kiss was when the ball dropped."
The two got together for New Year's Eve in 2008 and agreed to go out together. They had fun the entire night, and at one point, Underwood decided the time had come to take the plunge. Fisher wasn't big on public displays of affection, so the country musician made the first move by kissing him in public.
After their first kiss, everything seemed to fit perfectly, and a few years later, on July 10, 2010, the two tied the knot with a big wedding. The ceremony was held on the lawn of Georgia's Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation resort, and there was barely a dry eye in the house.
The two are proud parents, and Fisher admitted, he admires Underwood's skills as a mother, saying she's brilliant with the boys and "loves us all so well."
Underwood shared that her sister advised her to recite the Pledge of Allegiance whenever she felt like crying. Needless to say, she had never sounded as patriotic as she did that day. The ceremony ended with the pair reciting their favorite scripture passages, followed by their vows.
Underwood mentioned that out of all her relationships, Fisher fit her the best. Because he's a famous hockey player, he knew what her life would be like, with endless traveling and press scrutiny. Being away from each other also didn't bother them either, since both are reasonably independent individuals.
The Arrival of Their Children
The two settled in together, and they were on cloud nine. The pair were just as gripped by each other as when they met. The country musician also shared that Fisher had been a solid source of support throughout their marriage. When she was pregnant with their children, he especially pulled through:
"He is so levelheaded about everything, and when I was dealing with everything, not just emotionally but hormonally... I was probably not very easy to love, to be honest. And to have somebody so even-keeled, he was my lifeline, keeping me grounded."
In 2015, they welcomed their first son, Isaiah Fisher, then in January 2019, they had another boy they named Jacob Fisher. The two are proud parents, and Fisher opened up when they had Isaiah, saying they were "blessed" to have him with them.
But the two boys aren't the only additions to the couple's family. In 2020, Mike posted an Instagram Story of himself at a cattle auction. A little bit later, he followed it up with a video of two cows in a field with the caption:
"@CarrieUnderwood wanted cows for Christmas. Merry Christmas babe!!"
His wife was over the moon when she received her gift and thanked him in an interview. Now, their farm right outside Nashville boasts two boys, two cows, three dogs, and a coop full of chickens.
Besides elaborate gifts, Underwood and Fisher keep their relationship fresh by spending time together and going on dates. The couple enjoys date nights whenever they aren't on the road to keep their bond strong.
The pair have posted pictures and videos of them enjoying various activities together. One staple for them is going to the CMT Country Music Awards. They also love spending alone time together, just enjoying each other's company. Carrie even showed off her aim at a shooting range during one of their dates.
