Carrie Underwood Reacts to Being Booed during American Idol Hollywood Week
Carrie Underwood sparked debate after getting booed during "American Idol" Hollywood Week. The country star responded publicly, while fans argued over whether her attitude is really what the show needs.
Carrie Underwood may have been the darling of "American Idol" season 4, but the current live audience isn't exactly rolling out the red carpet for her return. The country queen found herself in the line of fire this week during a tense moment on the judging panel.
While filming the Hollywood Week "Music City" takeover, the atmosphere turned sour faster than a flat note. It seems the hometown crowd wasn't ready for the blunt honesty Carrie brought to the judges' table.

The Performance That Sparked a Riot
The awkward exchange unfolded during the Hollywood Week "Music City takeover" episode filmed in Nashville.
Judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Underwood had the tough task of narrowing 127 contestants down to just 30, while a crowd of roughly 1,500 fans watched the performances.

The drama centered around a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from West Virginia, named Mor. During his performance, he took a massive risk by ditching the professional band to perform an original song, "How to Love You," solo.
This decision drew mixed reactions from the judges. When Underwood offered her critique, she suggested the song choice may not have been the best move. "Was not sure that was the right song," she stated.

The Crowd Pushes Back
The moment quickly escalated. As soon as Underwood finished speaking, the audience began to boo the judge from their seats.
But instead of backing down, the "Before He Cheats" singer leaned into the reaction. "I feel you guys are gonna boo me," she'd said before the boos began. "You're gonna boo me. It's coming. Just bring it on. I love it. Your boos are feeding me."
The reaction prompted fellow judge Bryan to jump in and defend her. "She only won this. She knows."
Underwood quickly fired back with a playful jab of her own. "You're not included in the discussions," she said with her head turned to face the audience.
The moment became one of the most talked-about scenes of the episode, which aired Monday on ABC.

Social Media Firestorm
The conflict didn't stay in the theater. As the episode aired, Underwood addressed the moment directly on social media.
On X, the singer wrote: "Boo me. I don't care. 😂😜🤪" However, reactions online were anything but unanimous.
Some viewers questioned whether she truly meant it. One Instagrammer commented: "Oh she super [cares] Imao," while another asked, "Seriously, what happened to her?"

Over on Facebook, the critique got even more personal. One disappointed fan wrote, "What happened to you? You’ve gotten too big for your britches. I used to think so much of you. Not so much now. Very sad!"
A different commenter added, "Seriously, what happened to her?"
Some Viewers Defend the Singer
But plenty of viewers argued that Underwood was simply doing what judges are supposed to do.
One person wrote: "Carrie is doing her job here. I am not a fan of judges that always say 'I Loved That'. Honest Feed back is what they get paid for."

On Facebook, another supporter defended her judging style. "She's there to judge and give her opinion. If she were 'nice' to everyone she wouldn't be helping them develop. There's a reason she's a top selling artist."
Others continued to back the singer as well. "Yall nothing wrong with her she is beautiful and sweet."
A History of Tough Love
This isn't just a one-time bad mood for the "Before He Cheats" singer. Interestingly, Underwood had already hinted that Hollywood Week might get heated.

Weeks before the episode aired, she teased the audience reaction on social media: "Spoiler alert, I get booed a lot from her Hollywood Week audience."
The moment reflects a reality she has spoken about before when discussing her judging style. In an earlier appearance on SiriusXM's "The Highway," Underwood opened up about her judging philosophy.
"Sometimes I get in trouble from people like, 'How dare she say that it wasn't perfect?' And I'm like, 'I just want everybody to learn, and that's part of it. And nobody wants to just hear that they're amazing all the time.'"
The singer stepped into the high-profile role in March 2025, replacing Katy Perry. It appears she has no intention of being the "nice" judge just to win over the crowd.
A Tough Week for Contestants
Hollywood Week proved to be emotional for many singers. Several promising contestants were eliminated before reaching the Top 30.
Among them was Mary Jo Young, who returned to the show after a memorable appearance in 2021. She ultimately lost a sing-off against Chloe Lauren for the final available spot.

Singer Roelle, who gained attention for her journey from Puerto Rico, also failed to advance after performing Chappell Roan's "California."
Meanwhile, Trew the Star delivered an energetic performance of Al Green's "Love and Happiness," though the performance may have strained his voice.
Another contestant, Jayson Arendt, who first impressed judges by arriving with his baseball team during auditions, also failed to advance after performing Blake Shelton's "Austin."
The Competition Moves Forward
Despite the drama — and a few boos along the way — the competition is moving into its next stage.
The Top 30 contestants will now head to Hawaii for the show's Ohana Round, which airs March 9 at 8 p.m. Eastern time on ABC.
And if the Hollywood Week crowd reactions are any sign, the judges — especially Carrie Underwood — may be in for even more heated moments ahead.
