Mom Makes Prom Special for Daughter with Months to Live So She Gets to Be 'Princess That She So Deserves'

After her young daughter's soul-crushing diagnosis, a woman knew she wouldn't be able to see her walk down the aisle or attend other important occasions. Wanting to make her girl feel special all the same, the mother decided to give her an epic sendoff to her high school prom.

Tessa Lewis lived with her beautiful family in Oakdale, Caerphilly, Wales. In May 2020, her world changed drastically when her daughter, Eden Lewis, complained of knee pain, nearly two months after the world became familiar with COVID-19 and the lockdown regime.

Initially, the family thought the shooting pains were due to Eden's lack of activity, but when they persisted, Tessa took her to the doctor for an X-ray. A month later, in June 2020, the mother received a call from her doctor, and after seeing an orthopedist specializing in the care of the youth, her worst nightmare came true.

The Painful Diagnosis

The shocking news devastated Tessa, who couldn't bring herself to share it with the rest of her family, but she dreaded breaking it to Eden the most. Being pregnant with her youngest baby at the time, she first called her husband, who left work and hurried home to support her.

Soon afterward, Eden began her chemotherapy at a hospital in Cardiff, and four days later, her mom welcomed her youngest daughter. It was a challenging time for Tessa, who said she couldn't be with her unwell older daughter because her infant girl was sick with meningitis.

But thanks to her mother stepping up to be with Eden, the Oakdale woman somehow managed to cope with the difficult circumstances. Sadly, her daughter's health continued to decline, and in early 2022, Tessa learned a piece of heart-stopping news—Eden had only months to live.

While Eden's family was concerned about her reaction to the painful information, her unusual response astonished everyone. Instead of wallowing in a bubble of fear and misery, Eden preferred to study for her trigonometry exam. A few days later, she took all the exams she could manage.

Planning for Prom

Tessa described Eden as a determined young girl who loved Spanish and fashion and showed a keen interest in English, Math, and the Sciences. The mother said her daughter was passionate about animals and aspired to enroll in an animal care course at Usk College in September 2022.

Sticking to normalcy as much as possible, the Lewises decided to cherish whatever time they had with their young girl. When her high school prom approached, Eden's willingness to attend the magical evening was just a snapshot of her courage throughout her battle with cancer.

Knowing that she might never see her daughter marry someone or be a part of other memorable occasions, Tessa decided to make Eden's prom a grand affair. As she watched her girl prepare for prom, something tugged at her heartstrings, and a part of her longed to see Eden in a wedding gown someday.

Emotions ran high as Tessa helped her 16-year-old daughter don a stunning gown for the unforgettable occasion.
