Jason Momoa's ordinary-looking physique has caused controversy on social media. Most of his fans have risen to his defense; however, the critics continue to return with criticisms of his body shape. In the end, Momoa had to come out with a reason for the changes.

Jason Momoa once caused an uproar on the internet because of his body shape. It all started when US Weekly shared a picture of the "Aquaman" star in Venice. The image captured him shirtless beside a pool on vacation with his ex-wife, Lisa Bonet.

He looked as handsome as ever, but many balked at his body. Some commenters called the physique a "dad bod," and others wondered what had happened to the muscular body they had all become accustomed to.

It did not take long for his hardcore fans to rise to his defense; Some said he was entitled to look how he desired as he was on vacation, and some praised him for choosing to share pictures that were not airbrushed or photoshopped.

Others pointed out that while the actor's abs were not well defined, what he has can not be called a "dad bod." One user wrote:

"Nothing wrong with that body! People need to quit putting others down just to make themselves feel better about their lot in life."

Another agreed: "He's an amazing-looking man, with talent and a big heart. Anyone pointing their finger at him for not living up to their expectations needs to remember they have three fingers pointing right back at themselves!" Another quipped:

"I’d like to see the body of all the keyboard critics saying this. Remember people, before you judge, make sure youre perfect."

There were those who also admitted that what he chooses to look like is his decision. One user wrote: "I don't think it's anybody's business to be judging him looking like this in his private life."

A furious woman even claimed that he looked better than most men she knew. She said that body shaming a man or a woman is simply unacceptable.

Momoa's Reaction

News of what fans had to say about his body quickly spread far and wide on the internet in those days; however, a month later, when Momoa was asked if he took offense at the comments about his physique, he responded lightheartedly, saying, "No, not at all." He even joked about his plans to show off his "dad bod" soon.

In reactions to the picture of Momoa's "dad bod," many suggested he return to lifting weights, but many also don't know that Momoa's body is primarily a result of good genetics.

He revealed that he plans to keep the “dad bod” going and does not want to do more sit-ups.

He is a Hawaiian descendant, and they are known to be big people. Still, aside from that, he also undertakes many extra-curricular activities, especially rock climbing, which he once admitted inspires him.

In fact, the talented actor has revealed that he sees lifting weights as a tedious exercise. He prefers to hike and do bodyweight exercises like regular pushups and pull-ups when he is not rock climbing.

Momoa knows rock climbing is not exactly the best fitness activity for him because of his heaviness; however, he has always had a passion for it. He once said that he loves how it makes him feel even though he has suffered many mishaps.

The actor has also spoken about injuries that have stolen his flexibility. He has endured a broken femur and knee injuries on both legs that led to them getting redone.

Despite all that, Momoa is still enthusiastic about rock climbing but has admitted that there is always time to develop beneficial habits that can help him regain his flexibility. The actor is looking for new challenges; he has even tried yoga, which he complained was too hard on him because of his rigid joints.

The actor still visits climbing gyms and has said he has a soft spot for them. He may not be as flexible as he used to be, but his love of climbing will never wane.

Momoa got introduced to rock climbing by his mom, and he is always thankful she did because rock climbing instilled a sense of creative freedom and fearlessness in him, both of which have been assets to him in his financial career and personal life.

He is also passing the passion on to his kids so they can learn what they can from the experience while feeling his presence with them each time they play.

Why His Body Changed

The controversy about his "dad bod" started in 2019. This year Jason Momoa talked about possible reasons for the loss of his once-admired abs.

Not only is he aging, he has also been getting injured while shooting movie projects, and he has had to undergo surgery to get rid of a hernia. Last fall, when he appeared on Ellen DeGeneres's show, he said:

"I'm getting old. I messed up my eyes. I just got something in it that kinda cut it up, and then I've gotta get surgery, I have a hernia, I've got ribs out. I'm just getting beat up."

Around that time, he shared a picture of himself getting an MRI on Instagram. The photo captured him shirtless and on his back, a familiar image that worried his fans. In his caption, he wrote:

"You got to break some eggs to make an omelette. aloha j. thankful for my ohana and friends."

He later revealed that it was just a precaution. He was doing fine because he made a public appearance on the 94th Academy Awards red carpet just a day after the hernia surgery. Given all that he has endured, it is not shocking that the actor has been taking things easy.

When he appeared on James Corden's talk show in August, he revealed that he plans to keep the "dad bod" going and does not want to do more sit-ups.
