In 1998, speculation about Thomas' sexuality emerged on the website CyberSleaze. The rumors immediately spread until they reached the actor's 95-year-old grandmother in Pennsylvania.

He also welcomed queer roles that other heterosexual actors would usually dodge. Thomas, who played a bisexual hustler in the movie "Speedway Junky" saw the opportunity as a chance to grow in his field. He said:

"I thought, 'If I am going to grow as an actor, I need to challenge myself.' I didn't do these pieces to change my image. I did them for me."

Thomas also accepted a queer role in "Common Ground" to portray the difficult reality gays and lesbians faced in the '50s until the '90s. In a previous interview, Thomas acknowledged how time had changed society's perspective of homosexuality, growing more accepting of it.

He focused on his career, filming Disney's "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and not bothering to read the rumors about him. Finally, in 1998, Thomas addressed the rumors during an interview with Jay Leno. He said:

"Pretty much in Hollywood, you're not anyone until it's rumored that you're gay, so I wasn't upset about it. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but they're rumors [...]."

Leno then finally asked Thomas the question many had been dying to know the answer to. The actor confirmed, "No, I'm not [gay]. I'm not."

"I'd been going non-stop since I was eight years old. I never took the fame too seriously. It was a great period in my life, but it doesn't define me," he said.
