The Photo That Changed Everything
Life started with challenges and disappointment for baby Sofia. She lived in an orphanage, and, like all babies, she longed for the love of a mother and father.
On the other side of the world, two parents, Jennifer and Hector Sanchez were browsing a ministry website called Reese's Rainbow. They adored their three sons, one of whom was born with Down syndrome.
Joaquin's birth encouraged the couple to adopt another child with a similar genetic condition—a photo of a tiny blonde baby with big and curious eyes caught their attention. Jennifer shared:
"This was the photo that caught our eye one December day. The photo that sparked it all. The photo that planted a seed. A seed that grew and eventually blossomed into the adoption of Sofia ..."
They Showered Her with Love
Sofia came to America in 2010 and was raised in a house full of siblings who ensured she was taken care of. Brother Joaquin had a partner in crime, and Sofia had "someone just like her" to adventure through life with.
Their sibling connection is a gift and, paired with the immense love from their parents, enabled them to thrive. Sofia is a little advocate for Down syndrome, raising awareness and sharing her experience.
Starring in various nationwide adverts and campaigns, Sofia has an impressive résumé. She has broken stereotypes and stigmas about the capabilities of people with Down syndrome.
The Inspiring Viral Video
In 2016, a video posted by Sofia's mother went viral. In the clip, Jennifer asked her daughter if her genetic condition was scary, and the precious girl had the best reply. She said: "No, it's not scary. It's so exciting!"
Sofia's joy was infectious, and people were touched by the positivity she exuded. Her condition didn't define her and quickly became the thing that set her apart. Her mother was proud and happy that people could hear from her child, sharing:
"I thought maybe it's time people hear from my kids, not me. What better person to bring about awareness than someone who has Down syndrome?"
