Man Returns Lost Purse Full of Money to 93-Year-Old Owner and They Become Fast Friends
No matter what the world tells you, never underestimate the power of random acts of kindness. Not only can they brighten up someone's gloomy days, but they can also forge lasting connections between strangers. The man in today's story went viral for something similar.
Paul Young, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, was happy and contented with where he was in life. He was the owner of a delivery and removal business and happened to have an assignment at Rycroft Green, a sheltered housing facility in Swinnow.
It was the same place Young had worked before and helped many people settle in. But his April 16, 2021 visit turned out to be far different than his previous jobs—something that left a lasting impression on his mind and heart.
A Lost Purse
On that Friday in April, Young was about to leave after finishing work when something lying on the floor caught his attention. When he bent down to have a closer look, he was startled to see that it was a purse.
As the older lady thanked Young for his kind-heartedness, the pair chatted for some time and became fast friends.
In an attempt to identify its owner, the Pudsey resident opened the purse, hoping to find an identification card or something to help him connect the dots. Unfortunately, the purse had nothing inside except money. Young looked again to find a bank card but to no avail.
Using Social Media's Power
Not knowing what else to do but determined to return the purse to its rightful owner, Young turned to Facebook and decided to harness the power of social media. He created a post where he expressed his predicament and requested people to help him find the lost purse's owner.
Young added that because he could not find a warden in Rycroft then, he hoped that sharing the story on Facebook would do the trick. A part of his caption read, "Just let me know what's in the purse, and you can have it back."
Although he had posted about it on social media, Young admitted he had a strong feeling that the purse belonged to someone living in Rycroft Green. However, he said he wasn't sure because the area was always crowded with people, and it could also have been the property of a visitor. He added:
"At the end of the day, you don't know if it's the last of somebody's money, or it's all they have left."
Finding the Owner
Young's Facebook post received 71 reactions and more than 1,500 shares. Meanwhile, he hoped that someone with reliable information about the purse would come forward and contact him. Luckily, a Rycroft staff member saw the post and told Young that a female resident had recently lost her purse.
Because the sheltered accommodation was meant for people who were 55 or older, it made sense that one of them dropped the purse and might have struggled to pick it up or go back in its search later.
After taking the resident's address from the warden, the 37-year-old West Yorkshire man showed up with the purse and was delighted to return it. To save the special moment, he clicked a picture with the elderly lady, who looked relieved and happy as she held her purse.
It Sparked an Instant Friendship
Looking back on the incident, Young, whose girlfriend's parents also lived in the same housing facility, said he wouldn't want it to happen to anyone and was glad he could help. He recalled that when he took out the lady's purse, her face lit up with happiness, clearly showing that it belonged to her. Young added:
"She tried to give me a reward for giving it back but I wasn't going to take it. I was just glad to see how happy she was."
As the older lady thanked Young for his kind-heartedness, the pair chatted for some time and became fast friends. In a subsequent post, Young shared the heartwarming picture he took with the 93-year-old lady and said she was "over the moon" after being reunited with her purse.
The Online Response
His second Facebook post received 1,700 reactions and 187 comments, with netizens praising him for his good heart and generosity. Many even doted on how lovely he and the senior citizen looked in the picture and that the world could use more people like him:
