During a January 2023 interview, Valerie Bertinelli spoke openly about her looks. The star admitted to having spent decades thinking she had to look a certain way so people could like and accept her.

She confessed to having started experiencing body image issues since childhood. The late Eddie Van Halen's ex-wife said in her book that she had to pretend to be upbeat and an all-American girl.

However, privately, she thought of herself as a failure. By the time she was 47, she'd become Jenny Craig's spokesperson as she tried to deal with the reasons for her weight gain over the years and to get healthy.

She'd separated from Eddie and refused to take his money. The "One Day at a Time" actress was a single mother working to earn a living and lost 50 pounds using "unhealthy" methods.

She knew there wouldn't be before and after photos and accepted whatever happened to her body. Bertinelli was done judging herself and wished to be more accepting and kinder to herself.

In 2015, she honestly and without shyness tweeted that she understood getting wrinkles because of menopause and aging but couldn't stand the pimples that came with it!

Bertinelli once described herself as an "everything's fine" type of woman, but the truth was the years had been hard on her. In 2016, she lost her father and felt she had to care for her mother by making her feel included and like people were still paying attention to her.

However, while caring for her parent, the star forgot to do the same for herself. When her mother passed away, the last few years and the sadness she experienced from the loss combined and grabbed her heart for too long with her, but she eventually found a way to put herself first.

How Does Valerie Take Care of Herself?

After losing her parents and dealing with other life trials, Bertinelli used food to avoid stress and sadness. However, trying to eat away her issues made her feel worse about herself, but now one of her mottos is "choose happy."

Although the truth was that sometimes making that choice was a challenge. When she prepared to turn 60 in April 2020, her mission was to know what "true joy" felt like inside and out, even though it was a challenge in this trying world.

The actress believed being joyous was linked to making healthy choices in everything she did. She had to find health in the people she surrounded herself with, the food she ate, and most importantly, the way she spoke to herself.

She said being a cook was something in her soul and heart, and she liked showing her love through food. In October 2021, the Food Network star revealed in an Instagram Story post that she'd gotten her second vampire facial.
