Sam Smith’s Weight Gain: See Their Body Transformation over the Years

Sam Smith's weight gain has been an issue for the singer for many years. Since their childhood, Smith has struggled with body shaming. Now, as an adult, he is finding his journey to self-acceptance.

Despite having a successful music career, singer Smith, a member of the queer community, has constantly struggled with their body image, but it gets worse when they have to deal with body shamers.

According to Smith, they get more offended when people make fun of their body than when they talk about their sexuality. Even so, the singer had made quite an effort to lose weight, and at one point, they lost many pounds in a short period.

Sam Smith Battled with Weight Issues Since Childhood

Smith, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, opened up about struggling with weight gain as a child and how their insecurities interfered with their passion for music. While in school, whenever they felt stressed or lonely, they would find solace in eating because it made them feel better.

Smith said that, at times, they get more upset about people's opinions on their weight than when people comment about their sexuality. According to them, it hurts when people comment about their weight because they feel like people want them to change who they are.

The singer said they struggled with self-image while starting their music career, but with time, they came to accept their body and love themselves. In an interview with VMagazine in 2018, Smith recalled how anxious they were when shooting their first music videos.

Even though weight gain has been a struggle for Smith, the singer keeps making a lot of effort toward self-acceptance.

They said they were not happy with their body then and constantly tried to control how the camera moved during the video shoots. However, Smith noted that with time, they've learned to love and accept their body and are now comfortable on camera.

The Singer Went on to Lose 50 Pounds after Seeking Help

In 2015, Smith began working with a nutritionist, Amelia Freer. The singer was focused on losing weight, and in two weeks, they had made an enormous milestone and lost 14 pounds. Even though they had lost a significant amount of weight, Smith still struggled with body image.

In 2017, Smith worked with a personal trainer and became a fitness enthusiast. During that time, they would hit the gym thrice a week to do many cardio workouts and weight lifting.

In an interview on "The Late Late Show With James Corden" during a carpool episode aired on Youtube, Smith revealed they were comfortable with their weight loss and wanted to keep it down for at least ten years. They then noted that when they get older, they would loosen up and live a relaxed life wearing caftans.

People Noticed The Singer Gained Weight Again & Fans Defended Them from Fat Shamers

Recently, fans noticed Sam Smith's weight gain and had different opinions about the Grammy Award winner's appearance. While some Twitter users body-shamed them and said all nasty things, others acted in their defense.

One Twitter user negatively commented on Smith's weight gain and compared their situation to singer Adele stating that when Adele was losing weight, Smith gained it. Another fan defended Smith and wrote:

"Yeah, the tweets about Sam Smith have been extremely disgusting. All the man did was gain a lil weight."

Another fan stated it was ignorant of people to body-shame Smith because they made so much effort and lost a lot of weight in the past years.

Another Twitter user also defended the singer and said that maybe they were naturally chubby because even after losing so much weight, they ended up gaining again. Smith has always been open about their weight and admitted that it's constantly been an everyday struggle.

In 2019, the 30-year-old opened up about their struggles, especially during the Christmas holidays. They said they always find themselves trying different types of foods, and in the long run, they gain weight. Smith then encouraged people going through the same struggles to love and accept their bodies no matter their weight.

Sam Smith Accepts that Body Image Is an Issue They Deal with Daily

Even though Sam Smith tries hard not to focus on their weight, they said their body image will always be an issue. Smith said that, when doing their makeup, they sometimes get sick of themselves but trust their makeup artist.

The singer also noted that despite going through body image struggles, they'd trained themselves to watch the right type of films and not to look at certain movies or ads because they might start comparing themselves, which would affect how they feel about their body.

Even though weight gain has been a struggle for Smith, the singer keeps making a lot of effort toward self-acceptance.

In 2019, Smith shared a photo of them with no shirt and opened up about how in the past, they would starve themselves for weeks to do a shirtless photo shoot, which they would post and then take down the next minute.

Smith said it took them the courage to post the photo and was glad they had begun fighting back the fears of being judged because of their body and had learned to embrace how their parents created them.
