Deborah Comes from a Family of Painters

Doja Cat's father is of the Zulu tribe, and Sawyer is Jewish, so her children with Dlamini grew up in an eclectic ambiance. Her daughter would later reveal that growing up as a biracial child wasn't easy.

Sawyer, a gifted artist and graphic designer had, in turn, been inspired by her mother, an architect and an artist. For a time, Sawyer and her children lived with her mother in Rye, New York.

When her daughter was eight years old, Sawyer moved her family to an Ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains in search of peace. There she was known as Ishwari. The head of the community was none other than jazz legend Alice Coltrane.

The singer has quoted her mother's musical taste as a significant influence. Sawyer loved R&B and introduced her daughter to Erykah Badu, the Coltranes, Jamiroquai, Seal, and The Fugees.

The Relationship with Doja's Father Was a Short Chapter in Deborah's Life

Sawyer met Doja Cat's father, Dumisani Dlamini, in New York when he was performing in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical "Serafina!" Their relationship was brief, as he was constantly touring. Dlamini returned to South Africa when his daughter was an infant, and Doja Cat would reveal:

"I felt confused a little bit. It's a little strange to see everybody else with their dad, and you didn't even really have one."

While his daughter affirms she has never met him, Dlamini has stated that he returned to Africa out of homesickness, expecting Sawyer and the children to join him there. He is proud of her and frequently comments on his daughter's Instagram posts.

Dlamini is an actor, dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, and producer with movies like "Of Journey, Home, and Treasure" to his credit. He also co-starred with Academy Award-winner Whoopie Goldberg in the film version of "Serafina!" in 1992.

Sawyer and her other children have been kept out of the limelight. The singer has spoken of her mother with great respect and admiration but has never shared any photos of her, allowing her family to maintain their anonymity.

All we know about the woman who produced such an extraordinarily vibrant and talented performer is through Doja Cat's proud description of her mother as a loving and gifted woman.
