Life looks very different for Katherine Heigl these days. Far from red carpets and flashing cameras, the actress now spends her days surrounded by animals, open land, and the family she built with husband Josh Kelley.

For Katherine Heigl, the move away from Hollywood was not accidental. Creating a calmer environment meant she could focus on what matters most: raising her three children.

And as the story behind each child unfolds, it becomes clear that every chapter of their family journey came with its own surprising turn.

A Ranch Life Far from Hollywood

Katherine has embraced a slower pace of life in Utah, where she lives with her husband, singer and songwriter Josh Kelley, and their children. The actress said the ranch lifestyle allows the family to stay grounded.

Speaking with Extra in September 2025, Katherine described how lively their property has become thanks to the many animals they care for.

"We have horses, two donkeys, and two goats and two pigs and chickens and cats and dogs… We did just get two guinea pigs — that's exciting for the children," she explained.

Caring for so many animals comes with plenty of responsibility, but Katherine said the effort is well worth it.

The "27 Dresses" star also spoke about her family's life in Utah during a 2023 appearance on "Today with Hoda & Jenna," where the hosts asked whether raising her children there feels like the right fit.

Katherine said the quieter environment brings her a sense of peace and has helped confirm that moving to Utah was the right decision for their family, even if it means her children sometimes miss out on the excitement of a bigger city.

She told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb what she explained to her kids:

"But I said to them recently, 'Listen, I understand that you are sacrificing that in some ways, but I still think it was the right choice for our family because I am more centered and aware of what's going on in your life. It's a smaller town, I know who your friends are, I know who you are spending time with, I know what's up with school.'"

She added that living in a smaller community makes it easier for her to stay involved in their daily lives and keeps her "finger on the pulse."

Katherine and Josh are parents to daughters Naleigh and Adalaide, and son Joshua. But the path to building their family unfolded in several unexpected ways. And it all began with the child who first made Katherine a mother.

Nancy Leigh

Katherine and Josh became parents for the first time in 2009 when they adopted their daughter Nancy Leigh, known as Naleigh, from Korea.

A since-deleted announcement on the Jason Heigl Foundation website, later cited by People, introduced their "almost 10-month-old baby girl." The message explained that the girl's name honored Katherine's mother, Nancy, and sister Margaret Leigh.

For Katherine, adoption had long been part of the future she imagined for her family. In an interview with Scholastic, she explained that her childhood played a major role in shaping that decision.

"My sister Meg is Korean, and my parents adopted her three years before I was born," she said. " I wanted my own family to resemble the one I came from, so I always knew I wanted to adopt from Korea."

The first meeting with Naleigh was emotional, but the process of bonding required patience and understanding.

"It was a struggle for me because all I wanted to do was bond with her. But it takes time for a child to trust this new situation and to trust you," Katherine recalled, noting that their social worker explained this adjustment period is common.

According to Harper's Bazaar, with details later reported by People, she was born with a congenital heart defect and underwent open-heart surgery before leaving Korea.

Fortunately, the procedure was successful. "Her heart is 100 percent fine now. She has a scar, so she won’t be wearing bikinis, which is fine by us," Katherine later shared. But the couple's growing family story was far from finished.

Adelaide Marie Hope

Katherine and Josh welcomed their second daughter through domestic adoption in 2012. According to People, the newborn was named Adalaide Marie Hope.

However, the adoption itself unfolded in a way the couple had not expected.

As reported by E! News, Katherine later explained during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that she and Josh had originally begun another international adoption process.

Then their lawyer called with surprising news: a birth mother in the United States was due to give birth in just four weeks and was looking for adoptive parents. "[Her baby] is all yours if you want her!" Katherine recalled being told.

The sudden timeline caught Josh off guard. "You're telling me in a month we're going to have a newborn?" he asked.

Despite the unexpected turn, Katherine described the experience as "beautifully serendipitous and graceful," explaining that the timing allowed them to spend precious early weeks together as a family.

Still, another unexpected moment would soon reshape their family again.

Joshua Bishop

Years after welcoming two daughters through adoption, Katherine experienced something she had not initially planned for. The actress discovered she was pregnant.

According to People, Katherine and Josh welcomed their biological son, Joshua Bishop Kelley Jr., on December 20, 2016, weighing 7 lbs. 15 oz. "It was a surprise!" Katherine said while reflecting on the moment she learned the news.

But once their son arrived, the family quickly adjusted to their new routine on the Utah ranch. And with two older sisters already at home, Katherine joked that "this little boy is going to have all these girls fawning over him."

Yet while Katherine has largely focused on family life and animal advocacy in recent years, one of her latest public appearances quickly drew attention for reasons few expected.

A Long Absence Ends in Palm Beach

On March 8, 2026, the "Grey's Anatomy" alum attended the Wine, Women & Shoes benefit for Big Dog Ranch Rescue, held at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. It was her first major red carpet moment since the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in January 2024.

At the Emmys, she had turned heads in a strapless red gown with a sweetheart neckline, a jeweled brooch at the bodice, and a diamond choker — a sharp, polished look that felt very Hollywood. This time, she went in a completely different direction.

The Look That Got People Talking

Katherine arrived in an off-the-shoulder dress with short puff sleeves, a fitted waist, and a softly pleated knee-length skirt. The multicolored floral print mixed shades of green, blue, yellow, and purple on a light background.

She carried a yellow Chanel bag, wore blue pointed-toe heels, and styled her blonde hair in a voluminous updo, with dangling earrings and glossy lips completing the ensemble.

The full look was cheerful and feminine, but not exactly what fans were expecting for a long-awaited comeback moment.

Why Was She There?

The event itself had a meaningful purpose. Big Dog Ranch Rescue is a cage-free, no-kill shelter based in Loxahatchee, Florida, operating across 34 acres and having saved more than 88,000 dogs since 2008.

The three-day fundraiser, which ran from March 6 to 8, raised $5.5 million for the organization's operations and expansion plans. Heigl's connection to the cause runs deep.

She and her mother, Nancy, have run the Jason Heigl Foundation since 2008, named in honor of her late brother, with a mission of ending animal cruelty and abuse. Her pet food brand, Badlands Ranch, commits $250,000 a year to the foundation.

At the event, she spoke candidly about the crisis in American shelters. "We hear the word 'shelter,' and we think these animals are safe there, and we are not," she said. "It's not the shelter's fault, and it's not the fault of the shelter workers. It's that our country is overrun with puppy-mill breeders."

Katherine also pointed to what she sees as the core problem. "Our biggest goal right now really is eliminating the number of unwanted litters coming into this country, which is overcrowding our shelters," she said.

The Detail That Changed the Conversation

What the animal rescue mission could not overshadow was the location. Mar-a-Lago is the private club of President Donald Trump, and the event was co-chaired by his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.

For many fans, that detail eclipsed everything else about the appearance. The reaction online was swift and, at times, brutal. "Your first public appearance in two years and you choose for it to be at a Trump event- bold choice," a critic wrote.

Others focused on the outfit: "First appearance in two years and that's the dress she picked. 🙄" and "The dress is back from 2008 era omg girl ....."

One commenter added, "I feel like her commitment to that hairstyle should have been the final straw."

On Facebook, the political undertones were harder to ignore. "I feel like attending an event there speaks volumes," one person wrote. Another joked, "I used to have that same table cloth." A third was more dramatic: "Noooooo....Katherine! What are you doing?!?!"

A third wave of comments included "Great cause, TERRIBLE event location 😩" and"THAT'S where she decided to show up after being gone????" And one commenter went all the way: "Wow she really just ended her career like that."

In the end, while opinions about the event varied widely, Katherine continues to focus on the causes and family life that have shaped this new chapter of her life.
