Ohio Son Asks Mom to Be His Date to Prom after She Missed Her Own to Take Care of Him
A single mom sacrificed her teen years to raise her son the best way she could. Years later, he asks her to be his prom date after she missed her own to take care of him.
Melissa "MelRo" Roshan didn't have a normal childhood like most of her peers. By the time she was 16, she was pregnant and forced to drop out of school to take care of her son as a single mother.
There was no doubt in Melissa's mind that her son was her priority, and it remained this way for years. She worked two jobs since giving birth, hoping to provide for him the best way she could.
Melissa's Challenging Childhood
Melissa grew up in 23 different foster and group homes, having been abused by family members as a child. Unfortunately, her troubles did not end when she was in the system, and she was subject to the same abuse.
When she got pregnant, she was forced to live in a homeless shelter for teenage parents, where she earned her GED and worked to earn for herself and her son, Trey. "It was hard, but we made it work," Melissa proudly said.
A Different Story from Her Peers
Despite her troubled beginnings, Melissa became a model and a foster youth advocate. While her former classmates went on to enjoy normal milestones that people their age would experience, like prom, graduation, and going to college, she experienced none of these. However, she never thought much about it and accepted her reality, saying:
"After surviving a tumultuous childhood and an even harder time while in foster care, I immediately transitioned into being a teen mother. Seeing all my friends around me go to prom … was incredibly difficult. Part of me really wanted to go, but I knew I had a baby that needed me. And that became my reason for finding peace in missing out."
Melissa always dreamt about how her prom night would play out, imagining herself wearing a big princess ball gown and taking the most popular guy in school as her date. She even imagined her date to look like her celebrity crush, Johnny Depp.
None of those ever happened. But little did Melissa know then that her son would later play a role in making her dream of going to the prom a reality.
A Chance to Go to Prom
Growing up, Trey would hear his mom talk about prom several times. It was what made him realize that the prom was an important milestone in girls' lives, and he wanted his mom to have that experience she never got.
Thus, he decided he would one day take his mom to his own prom. And when the day finally came for him to ask his mom to be his date to his prom, she was utterly surprised.
At first, Melissa was hesitant to accept Trey's invitation because she knew how important it was for a high school student to attend the special night with friends. "You would do that for me?" she clarified with Trey. "Absolutely," Trey responded.
A Plan Seven Years in the Making
It was only a week before prom that Melissa realized her son was serious about taking her. Trey was determined to fill the void that had been empty for years.
According to him, he knew since he was 11 that he would take his mom to his prom. Knowing how much Melissa sacrificed to raise him well, he said that taking his mom to prom was the least he could do.
The young boy had nothing but nice words to say about his and the experience they shared together when prom night finally came. Mother and son spent the whole day getting dressed and pampered for their night out.
Feeling Like a Star
Donning a Vera Wang dress, the 36-year-old single mom walked inside the prom venue alongside her 18-year-old son. She shared that all eyes were on them during the unforgettable night.
"I felt like a model and a movie star! I loved my dress, but I loved my date even more. Turns out he was even more handsome than Johnny Depp!" she gushed.
While initially feeling too old to be there, she let herself enjoy and feel like a kid again. However, so that she didn't hog up too much of her son's time with his friends, she left after an hour and went to sleep that night with happiness and peace in her heart. "It was one of the greatest moments of my life," she admitted.
Trey spoke about how beautiful his mom looked, saying she didn't look 36 at all—to him, she looked 16 again, and he was happy to see her so happy.
Trey's prom marked the end of his high school journey, but it also marked a new beginning for him. After graduation, he became the first member of Melissa's family to ever attend college, pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. And Melissa couldn't be prouder of the man she raised.
