Michael Urie rose to fame after portraying the role of Marc St. James in the television series "Ugly Betty" from 2006 to 2010. The following year, he starred in "The Decoy Bride," and in 2013, in "The Hyperglot. He also appeared in the Netflix movie "Single All the Way" and Apple TV's "Shrinking."

While he can thank "Ugly Betty" for bringing him recognition in the industry, the show also paved the way for him and his current love interest to get to know each other more.

Michael Urie Came Out as Queer More than a Decade Ago

Urie's talent as an actor manifests in his successful career. While there are no doubts about his achievements, some fans have questioned his sexuality.

In a 2010 interview with Advocate, Urie came out as queer. He did not explicitly state his sexual orientation and instead referred to himself as a "member of the LGBT community." He said:

"I've never said I was straight, and I'm not saying I'm gay now. I never lie, and I've never shied away from the topic. I've certainly chosen through my work to do things that promote the rights of LGBTQ people."

Admittedly, Urie dated women in the past, and while others like him may have frowned upon that experience, the actor believes it felt right for him to date girls at the time. His relationships with women did not work out, but he also saw the same ending for some men he dated.

Urie kept his love life away from the spotlight as much as possible and he does not get into detail about his past relationships. However, all eyes are now on him and his current lover.

Michael Urie Has Been Dating Fellow Actor Ryan Spahn

Urie has been dating fellow actor Ryan Spahn, his co-star in "Ugly Betty." Spahn is a talented actor with several credits under his name, including "Shirley," "Modern Love," "The Bite," and "Chicago P.D."

The pair initially kept their romance under wraps, but as time passed, Urie became more open about his dating life. A mutual friend of the couple set them up to meet, but because of an unfortunate event, Urie had to cancel.

Fortunately, their paths crossed again when they met up with a friend who did not show up. The pair immediately felt sparks fly and fell in love. Their passion for acting undoubtedly allowed them to find common ground, and later, they shared the screen in "Ugly Betty."

They also worked together in the Washington production of "Hamlet" and the film "He's Way More Famous Than You," which Spahn wrote and Urie directed.

Despite dating for over a decade, Urie and Spahn remain unmarried. However, they are not shy to post photos of their relationship on social media. They also live together in a New York apartment, having the time of their lives.

Michael Urie Once Shared a Curious Dating Advice

During a previous interview, Urie shared dating advice based on his experience. "You can't take back something you say on a date," he said. The actor also suggested being real and avoiding lying to see if the person is really a match. He added:

"[...] Getting ready for a date is so important. Don't give it all away. You want to look great, but don't give it all away in rehearsal."

Urie isn't the only queer actor who previously kept his love life away from the spotlight. "Power Rangers" star David Yost also prefers privacy to avoid controversy.
