Rod's remission: he's clean now.
The iconic musician Sir Rod Stewart recently celebrated his 78th birthday with his family. Instead of a grand birthday bash, the family came together for a cozy family-only celebration. Rod's son, Liam Stewart, shared photos of the birthday festivities on his Instagram page.
The images posted were taken throughout January and February 2023, as the ice hockey player indicated in the caption. The post featured pictures of Rod and some of his children lounging on a couch, happily enjoying each other's company on their dad's special day.
Besides the birthday images on the couch, Liam showed more snaps of the family's celebratory antics. Two photos showed Rod staring jokingly at a plate with the words "Happy Birthday" scrawled on it. A candle stuck out from a single strawberry placed next to the birthday message.
Users responded positively to the glance into the Stewart family's private life.
Rod's children came together to show their dad their love and appreciation. They also spent some time together by going to a soccer match and supporting the Celtics. Along with the family photos, Liam posted a single snap of his pregnant partner, Nicole Artukovich, as she showed off her baby bump.
Rod's Son Posts Cozy Family Celebration of Dad's Birthday
Rod was lucky enough to have three of his eight kids with him, excluding Liam. The mixed batch of kids included Renee Stewart, 30, Alastair Stewart, 18, and Aiden Stewart, 12. Renee and Liam were the products of Rod's second marriage, while Alastair and Aiden's mother is Rod's current wife, Penny Lancaster.
Although Rod is happily celebrating with his family now, there was a time when things weren't as jovial for the Stewarts.
Users responded positively to the glance into the Stewart family's private life. Many fans took to Instagram to congratulate Rod on his birthday, while several others just wanted to comment on how endearing the posts were. Rod himself even commented on his son's post with three red hearts. One user remarked:
"Looks like a barrel of laughs which is always the way forward 💙 family."
Other followers responded similarly, saying it was tremendous to see the Stewart family get together and have some well-deserved fun. Unfortunately, Rod's other children, Sarah Streeter, 60, Kimberley Stewart, 44, Sean Stewart, 43, and Ruby Stewart, 35, couldn't join the family for some laughs.
Rod's Fight against Cancer: His Kids Were Always There for Him
Although Rod is happily celebrating with his family now, there was a time when things weren't as jovial for the Stewarts. In 2000, the "I Don't Want to Talk About It" singer was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors discovered a tumor on the singer's thyroid, and he was rushed to surgery a few days later. The singer commented:
"I was clearly as fit as a butcher's dog ... [But] the results of the tests indicated that the 'something' on my thyroid gland was a malignant growth: cancer. That piece of news will really do it to you. When the initial numbness had worn off, I felt fearful, vulnerable to a degree that I never had before."
Luckily they caught the cancer early, otherwise Rod may have permanently lost the voice that had made him so famous. That said, he did have some vocal loss after the operation, seeing as the doctors had operated on his neck. The musician explained that it took him nine months to recover his voice.
With his cancer in remission, Rod is back in the musical saddle once more.
His battle wasn't over, though. Rod was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years later, leading to his family joining to support him again. Both cancer scares put life in perspective for the musician and his family, and they all stood firmly by Rod's side as he battled the disease. Twice.
Rod Stewart's Happy Life in Remission
Luckily, Rod was cleared of all traces of cancer after battling the disease twice. The musician kept his diagnosis as quiet as possible and faced the entire ordeal with only his family by his side to avoid a media circus. However, when he was officially in remission, he decided to open up to fans:
"Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. No one knows this, but I thought this was about time I told everybody. I'm in the clear, now, simply because I caught it early. I have so many tests."
He made the announcement at a charity event meant to raise awareness and money for the Prostate Project and European Tour Foundation. He was highly optimistic about beating the disease and encouraged other men to get themselves tested. He insisted that an early diagnosis can save lives:
"If you're positive, and you work through it and you keep a smile on your face… I've worked for two years and I've just been happy, and the good Lord looked after me."
With his cancer in remission, Rod is back in the musical saddle once more. Although he had to work hard to recover his voice, he mentioned how pleased he is to have survived his ordeal. The musician is also working to spread awareness about cancer, and he's enjoying having time with his family, saying, "I couldn't ask for anything better."
