Why Was Jimmy & Rosalynn's Marriage Tough?

Jimmy and Rosalynn's romance began when they were teenagers. Then, she thought she would grow up and become "an old maid." Meanwhile, her future spouse remembered her as a fearful individual.

When Rosalynn first noticed Jimmy, she was 13, and he was 16 and noted there was no way they could explore a relationship in that case.

While that may have been so, young Jimmy admitted he "felt" they were suited for each other and gushed over her appearance and personality.

He later told his mother that Roslynn was the one for him. As such, he made the first move by proposing to her, but she turned down his proposal.

Rosalynn explained that her education was important. As an older child of "four" kids, she had to look after her loved ones and "promised" her dying father that she would go to college. The Georgia native eventually "graduated from junior college."

Nonetheless, Jimmy tried his luck again by asking her to marry him, and this time she said yes. The couple wed on July 7, 1946. However, life as newlyweds was not easy for them both.

Jimmy disclosed he was away from home most of the time because of work, while Rosalynn had to remain behind to take care of their household and look after their kids. He explained that as newlyweds, he "never interfered" when she made decisions regarding their four children or their home expenses:

"She had her life, and I had mine."

When reflecting on that period, Rosalynn disclosed that after going grocery shopping, she would get off the bus with the baby in hand and quickly run toward the house to lay the baby down and return for the groceries. "It was tough," said the mother of four.

The mental health activist divulged that her beloved husband has always shown trust in her and believed she "could do anything. Always. And so, I've done everything," said Rosalynn.

Meanwhile, when asked how they always resolve their issues to keep the love going, Jimmy said they try to put it behind them before bed.

"We make up and give each other a kiss before we go to sleep still in bed.[...] So, we try to become completely reconciled each night before we go to sleep," he said.

For the Georgia native, he has "married the best spouse," he said in May 2020. Jimmy added that he has found a partner who takes care of and engages with him and does things to keep him on his toes, adding Rosalynn keeps him "alive and interested in life."
