Melissa Gilbert became famous on the hit TV show "Little House on the Prairie." Now, years later, the 58-year-old actress shared her secrets to staying healthy and looking her best. She has always been open about her health and how she maintains her body.

Most recently, Gilbert shared that she shies away from expensive, body-altering procedures to keep looking youthful. She admitted that she and her husband, Timothy Busfield, both have exceptionally dry skin. To counteract this, a dermatologist recommended they use a special cream.

The cream works to rehydrate skin after it has lost some of its moisture, and Gilbert and Busfield apply it right after they showered. Besides Gilbert and her husband, other consumers have also lauded the product as a lifeline for those struggling with dry skin.

Gilbert can't praise the cream enough, saying she would recommend it to anyone struggling with itchy or dry skin. The former actress and her husband initially discovered it after a dermatologist recommended the product, and they've been avid fans ever since. She commented on the product:

"We're obsessed with La Roche Posay Lipikar Triple Repair Moisturizing Body Cream...this stuff is the bomb. Tim and I both have really dry skin—we have skin issues [and the] derm has us using [this] after we shower and put it on."

But besides changing creams, Gilbert also admitted she has started following a nutritious diet. Her aims aren't necessarily to look young anymore. Instead, the actress has realized that the important thing is staying healthy as she ages. She advocates for staying hydrated and eating wisely.

How Melissa Realized She Had to Quit Botox, Fillers, and Implants

In line with her new health-oriented lifestyle, Gilbert has decided to quit botox, fillers, and most other form of artificial beautification. The decision came after the actress divorced her previous husband, Bruce Boxleitner, in 2011. Although the two split up and remarried three times, Gilbert knew the last time was final.

The actress explained that she decided to divorce Boxleitner after she broke her back and had surgery. After her operation, Gilbert phoned her husband to pick her up, and in response, Boxleitner asked her to make another plan. Although she managed to get home, the answer made her realize it was time for a change.

While recovering, she mulled over Boxleitner's attitude toward her, and when they went on a family vacation to Hawaii, he refused to hold her hand. This turned out to be the last sign Gilbert needed, and she filed for divorce a while later.

Single and in her forties, Gilbert turned to botox, filler, breast implants, and coloring her hair to keep looking young. She dated a much younger Italian man, who egged her on to buy a Mustang. The actress felt she had to keep up with the competition in Los Angeles. However, she soon realized things were getting out of hand.

In 2012, Gilbert was injured while competing in "Dancing with the Stars." She was enjoying a regular day at home, relaxing on her patio, when her roof suddenly caved in. The actress was lucky to survive the wreck with only a concussion but took it as a sign that things in her life weren't going how they should be.

After recovering from the accident, Gilbert took a few steps back and did some introspection. She realized she was living a life she wasn't enjoying, succumbing to the pressures of trying to fit in in Los Angeles. The actress candidly explained that she realized her life wasn't enjoyable anymore:

"You're driving a Mustang convertible. Your face doesn't move. Your boobs are too big. You're with the wrong guy. The list went on."

So, she decided to scale down. Gilbert began looking for a house outside the big city where she could get in touch with what she really wanted once more. She gave up the botox and implants and, luckily, met Busfield before she left. The two found a cottage in the Catskills and settled down together.

Happy in Her Own Skin, Aging Naturally

Gilbert realized how society's perception of women changes as they age. She noticed that women are either seen as the "cute old doddering lady" or as the "wicked witch of the west." She warned other women to avoid becoming the latter but also mentioned that this view of women reduces them to much less than they truly are.

Gilbert saw that people often assume older women can't contribute as much to society as younger women and are often dismissed regarding their economic input and other roles they may play in the community. Following this realization, she started her website, Modern Prairie.

Gilbert's aim for her website was to empower women in every field. She hoped it would highlight women's continued contributions to the world and celebrate their accomplishments. She also went on to share her thoughts on aging and how it is perceived by the larger public, stating:

"My least favorite thing to read on a cream or a wash is 'anti-aging.' It seems nonsensical to me. It's inevitable."

These days, Gilbert advocated for accepting the natural process of aging. Instead of living in fear of what she deems a natural and necessary process, she puts her health above all else. She wants to empower others to adopt healthy habits, saying, "No fillers or Botox, no implants, no hair color. Just me. This is happy."
