Patti LuPone and her husband, Matthew Johnston, exchanged vows at the Lincoln Center. The couple has been together for nearly three-and-a-half decades and shares one son.

LuPone is an actress and singer known for performing on the theater stage. After starting her acting journey in the 1970s, she established a solid career on Broadway and in Hollywood. Little is known about Johnston besides his camera work on several films, beginning with "City Limits" in 1984.

Despite some difficult moments in their marriage, such as in 1994 when LuPone lost her role in a show on its way to Broadway and took out her frustrations on her family, the couple has remained together. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they had a hilarious moment when LuPone cut Johnston's hair.

Patti's Husband Once Said He Didn't Know Any Fun Facts about Her

While speaking to the LA Times, LuPone asked her husband to name a fun fact about her. Johnston, who was in the background, replied that he didn't know any. At that point, she responded in a seductively husky voice, "You don't know a lot about me."

Their hilarious exchange reflects the couple's relaxed household in rural Connecticut, LuPone's favorite spot. The actress enjoys life in the countryside and describes it as essential, especially after spending time working on Broadway and doing concerts.

Out of her work onstage, LuPone prefers to live quietly. She doesn't have social media accounts which she sees as "dangerous and a waste of time." She wants fans to remember the mystique of actors, and she prefers to keep a healthy blend between life in the spotlight and out of it.

Patti Cut Her Husband's Hair in Quarantine

Although much of LuPone's marriage is kept out of the public eye, she has referred to it several times. In one instance in April 2020, she mentioned how the quarantine had forced her to cut Johnston's hair.

It seems the husband wasn't entirely impressed with her effort as he thought he looked like Cletus, probably referring to the mop-looking messy hairstyle worn by Cletus Spuckler from "The Simpsons." A similar brown hairstyle is also sported on Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kasady character in the post-credits scene of Tom Hardy's "Venom."

In her defense, LuPone admitted she had had second thoughts about the end product she was looking for midway, which may have caused the bad haircut. She added that she went to the city to get her hair done because she was "not going to be depressed and then look in the mirror."

Patti and Matthew Have Been Married since 1988

Johnston and LuPone tied the knot in 1988, at a time when the actress was starring as Reno Sweeny in "Anything Goes." She said the wedding happened on her day off from the show and described the day as "a treasured memory in my family history," partly because of its magnificent location.

The couple exchanged their vows on the prestigious Vivian Beaumont Theatre stage in the Lincoln Center complex in New York City. It is the same stage the actress worked on and played an instrumental role in establishing her professional career.

On November 21, 1990, two years after walking down the aisle, LuPone gave birth to their first and only child, Joshua Luke. He grew up to be a theatre actor and reportedly shared the stage with his mother in a one-night concert of "The Cradle Will Rock" in 2014.

Patti's Husband Was Unintentionally Put Through Emotional Anguish by His Wife

One of the most challenging moments in LuPone's career was when actress Glenn Close surprisingly replaced her on "Simply Walk Away" in 1994. She had been performing the musical in 1993 and was contracted to continue in that role when the shows moved to Broadway.

However, that was not the case, as she learned through gossip columns that the show's composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, was replacing her. The moment marked a period of humiliation for LuPone, and she was livid about her treatment.

Those struggles in the workplace also entered her personal life, and she admitted that she put her family and husband through a difficult time of mental and emotional anguish. The actress would lash out at home, showing her anger at her loved ones because she could not do so at her workplace.

Luckily for Johnston and LuPone, that phase didn't spiral out of control. The couple has remained together for years after that. LuPone said although a sour aftertaste remains, she made peace with what happened.
