The opening night of The Whoopi Monologues was already set to celebrate one of Whoopi Goldberg's most iconic works. But as the cameras began flashing, another heartwarming moment stole attention — and it had everything to do with the woman standing beside her.

Goldberg attended the opening night of The Whoopi Monologues at New York City's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater on July 13 alongside her only child, Alexandrea Martin Dean, making the red carpet feel just as personal as it was theatrical.

A Broadway Return Decades in the Making

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1984, the production introduced audiences to a series of unforgettable characters and helped propel Goldberg to Hollywood stardom. The new revival stars an ensemble led by Kerry Washington and Kara Young while celebrating the work that changed the actress's life forever.

That journey began long before Broadway. According to Achievement.org, Goldberg — born Caryn Johnson — was raised by her single Mother in New York City before moving to California with her young daughter, Alexandrea, after separating from her first husband.

While living on the West Coast, Goldberg developed the character monologues that evolved into The Spook Show. Director Mike Nichols later saw the performance, brought it to Broadway as Whoopi Goldberg, and the show's success soon led Steven Spielberg to cast her in The Color Purple, launching her film career.

That journey also transformed Martin Dean's life. According to People, Goldberg welcomed her only child with her first husband, Alvin Martin, and later raised Alexandrea largely as a single mother. Their bond has remained one of the defining relationships of Goldberg's life, growing from difficult early years into decades of shared milestones.

Martin Dean has spoken candidly about those early struggles. Recalling her childhood in a TheGrio interview, she said, "I know what it's like with the food stamps, because my mom has her [Welfare] cards framed. Seriously… I remember that. I remember we had the one room space and we slept in the bed together."

She continued, "I remember when we wanted to travel we would drive across the country in broke down bugs. We didn't have the money to go to movies."

Goldberg has also reflected on raising her daughter while trying to build a career. Speaking during The View, she explained:

"My mom was a single mom too, and she did what she had to do. Yeah, she didn't have time to go, ‘Oh, how am I doing this?’ Because she had to take care."

She added, "People want work," while discussing her own experience as a welfare mother.

Today, the family story has come full circle. Martin Dean is married to Bernard Dean and is the mother of three children. At the same time, Goldberg recently celebrated becoming a great-grandmother for the second time after welcoming great-granddaughter Lotus Dean, according to Parade.

Then the Red Carpet Photos Stole the Spotlight

Against that backdrop, Goldberg and Martin Dean's appearance together carried even more meaning. One Getty Images photo shows the Mother and daughter standing close together in front of a vibrant yellow backdrop, smiling naturally as they pose for the camera.

Goldberg wears a flowing beige linen-style dress over a black top, accessorized with layered silver necklaces, hoop earrings, tinted glasses, and her signature pulled-back dreadlocks.

Beside her, Martin Dean embraces a modern monochrome look with a black blazer featuring bold white sleeve stripes, coordinating trousers, a cream tank top, aviator sunglasses, layered jewelry, braided hair, and a sculptural black handbag.
