Woman Hides Her Natural Hair since Her Teens until She Marries the Love of Her Life
For years, one woman kept a secret from everyone around her. Since her teenage years, she had been hiding her natural hair due to comments from others about its appearance. Then one day, everything changed.
For years, Shannyn Pierce was insecure about her natural hair because onlookers always had something to say. But after finding love and starting a family, she finally mustered the courage to be proud of her hair.
She refused to hide her hair from her husband and children, and they loved her just the way she was. Sadly, the reaction she received from others was not what she expected.
Shannyn was just an ordinary schoolgirl who loved sports, hanging out with friends, and living life to the fullest. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she noticed gray hairs appearing on her head at a young age.
As a teenager, Shannyn was constantly bullied by her classmates, with some making fun of her hair and telling her, "You really need to get your hair done." To fit in and avoid further ridicule, she started to dye her hair, covering up her natural gray locks.
Shannyn didn't want to be called "old" by her peers anymore, so she did what she could to cover up her hair for nearly two decades.
Shannyn's dyed her hair black to hide her gray hair, which started showing early on due to her genetics. However, the cost of salon visits every six weeks to maintain her dyed hair came at a hefty price and weighed on her.
The woman shared her upbringing shaped her views of hair dyeing. She lived in a home with a mother who never missed an appointment to color her hair, so she followed in her footsteps from the time she saw her first gray hair.
Despite the many benefits and positive experiences of embracing her natural hair, Shannyn has also had to deal with negative comments and opinions from others who think she has "let herself go."
15 Years Later, after Marrying Her Husband
After years of hiding her natural hair, Shannyn's life and perspective turned a new leaf when she found love and married Trevor, a supportive software architect.
As a mom of two, she started to think about the expenses she incurred on hair coloring and decided it would be better spent on her children.
As a result, Shannyn, a hockey coach in Celina, Texas, has saved around £1,000 (about $1,200) a year by ditching the hair dye.
Shannyn communicated with her husband about her move to embrace her natural hair, and he supported her decision. Her husband loved her gray hair and thought it was "the best look" for his wife.
Shannyn felt lucky to have found such an accepting partner and sang his praises online. She expressed:
"I have a man in my life that doesn't care, and I mean that in the best way possible. My choices are just that - mine, and he is supportive no matter what."
At 35 All Gray-Haired Shannyn Looks Stunning
Shannyn, now 35, has come a long way since her teens when she felt ashamed of her gray hair and spent a fortune dyeing it black. She fully embraces her natural gray locks and looks stunning.
After deciding to return her hair to its natural state before her 30th birthday, it took Shannyn four years to become entirely gray again.
But now Shannyn has no regrets and enjoys the compliments she receives on her healthy, chemical-free hair. Even her younger son desires to have the same hair as his beautiful mom.
Despite the "self-doubt" and feeling nervous about letting her gray hair shine at first, Shannyn now loves it and wants other women to stop feeling embarrassed about their natural hair color.
Shannyn also hoped that growing out her gray hair could be an example for others to be comfortable with who they are and embrace their natural appearance.
Despite the many benefits and positive experiences of embracing her natural hair, Shannyn has also had to deal with negative comments and opinions from others who think she has "let herself go."
She revealed that some people had been shocked and even horrified when she told them her hair story.
In a post on her Instagram page, Shannyn shared a photo of nine months of hair regrowth and wrote:
"Many people have to voice their negative opinions about MY hair, particularly due to my age. Imagine the shock and horror on their faces when I tell them I've been this gray since I was 16."
Shannyn doesn't listen to the negativity. To this day, the proud woman continues to share her gray hair with the world and enjoys reminding people that it is "okay" at any age!
